The film follows Molly, as she moves into her fathers house after his death, and strange occurrences soon begin. The story-line is all over the place, but still unnerving. Make no mistake about it, there are multiple scenes that are intense, graphic, and "in your face," but my most memorable scenes were the more subtle ones. I thought the use of the second level staircase was superb. The stairs were creepy; old staircases always seem to have this effect. Steep, narrow, dark, unfriendly, and they led straight to Molly's bedroom. One of my favorite scenes happens very early in the movie. First night in home, and home alarm goes off while sleeping. The couple gathers themselves and opens the door to look downstairs. The shot of looking down these unnerving stairs to the pitch black of the first floor was brilliant. The final 5-10 minutes does a great job of wrapping up the film by showing and letting the audience come to terms. It's not a "fun" movie, but if you're looking for a horror, this one will disturb.
Top quality acting. I've never seen Gretchen Lodge in a movie before, but I instantly wanted to know what else she'd been in after watching Lovely Molly. At no point did the acting feel false or forced - For such emotionally taxing scenes, I was absolutely impressed. At no point did I know what was going to happen. Usually it's pretty easy to guess where a film is headed, sometimes from the opening scenes, but I was constantly guessing. It made me question if what was occurring was due to supernatural purposes, human error, mental illness stemming from emotional trauma, or if none of it was really happening at all. I will always love a movie that forces me to think before and after its finished.I'm glad that I didn't read the reviews before I watched the movie. I would have avoided watching a film that is now one of my favourites. I could see elements of The Blair Witch Project, used effectively and perfect for suspense. I already want to watch it again to pick up on the symbolic elements of the movie that I wouldn't have noticed the first time around, now that I know the ending. I was left staring at my friend repeatedly saying "That was really good! But... But... That was REALLY good!"I would absolutely recommend, I'd suggest watching with an open mind and not letting yourself be swayed by other people's opinions.
I am surprised by the rating. I do admit regretting watching this movie. The reason is, I would prefer to avoid watching movies with such themes. But the movie itself is of high quality. No unnecessary jump scares. Nothing that would damage the ears. There is a creepy atmosphere and the sound effects are awesome. The song that is sung especially...you will know what I am talking when you watch it. Towards the end, the shot of "that thing" is haunting. That is one thing what I like. The fact that it is more than a story of abuse. It may also be a divisive movie judging by its rating. I don't know why though, it is not a head scratcher like yellowbrickroad or something like that. I can't say I will watch it again though, the themes and some of the scenes are very disturbing for me. 8/10
Obviously the title is not meant literally. You also shouldn't be surprised if you start thinking this is another found footage movie. The movie was made by one of thinking heads behind "Blair Witch Project". But don't worry (or be happy?), this is not one of those movies. It actually is one of the regular horror movies. The horror itself isn't that bad, though you will know where this is heading. The "twist" is a bit of a downer, almost bringing the whole thing down. On the other hand, some people might think this is funny. But what really was unnecessary was the ending. Just when you thought it should be over ... Cliché right around the corner
