Not since "Night of the Living Dead" was there such a sustained jolt of zombie horror as Andrea Bianchi's "Burial Ground". Aside from the brief sequences introducing the characters early in the movie, the action does not let up for a moment, and the feeling of approaching dread is palpable.Indeed, this zombie classic is one of few in that overcrowded sub-genre that feels worthy to sit alongside Romero's original film. It's not a complete ripoff: the zombies are a little smarter this time, employing a battering ram to gain entrance to the castle the heroes are hiding in, and they are perhaps the most gruesome example of the living dead ever captured on camera. The costume designers spared no detail, with dripping maggots and churning worms.A child actor in this movie also happens to be so ugly I wasn't sure who I wanted to look at least: him or the zombies. He looks like a cross between Peter Lorre and the kid from "Deliverance". The fact that he really only seems capable of saying "Mama! Mama!" made him even more repulsive. At first this seemed like a miscalculation: why would the filmmakers choose such a repugnant child if we are to root for him? But that's the thing... we aren't. During an astonishing scene later in the movie when he attempts to breastfeed from his sexy mother, and then, still later, when he is successful at this aim, with violent results, we come to see how another aspect of the horror in the best horror movies is the unreliability of humans, their uncomfortable closeness to the creatures they are fighting."Burial Ground" is a classic zombie movie, a must-see for fans of the genre.
these films are the things that make me be proud to be Italian ... movies to watch in brain off ... trashy , fun, bloody scenes in rivers , sex and drama enough ... Veteran horror director Andrea Bianchi is a little shaky, mind-boggling ZOOM and hastiness in turn but compensated by the excellent special effects master Giannetto De Rossi ...so the blood spilled in this film between decapitated heads , torn nipples bitten by a fantastic dwarf zombies and undead rotting between filthy worms ... if you like old horror movies artisan Italian is a must this cult , for everyone else there is always Shining to watch ... passed with flying colors ...
A bunch of zombies are unleashed from a crypt. The zombies attack an obnoxious group of decadent swinging socialites who are partying hearty at an adjacent villa. Replete with ham-fisted (mis)direction by Andrea Bianchi, a plodding pace, priceless putrid dialogue ("Mother, this cloth smells of death!"), cruddy dubbing, lousy acting, a nonsensical script (what's with the steel trap in the middle of the yard?), idiotic characters, plenty of explicit and excessive over-the-top gore, a satisfying smattering of sleazy sex, a no-holds-barred take-no-prisoners nightmarish'n'nihilistic sensibility, a wonky droning synthesizer score, unusually smart and resourceful zombies (these undead folks toss spikes with the exceptionally deft precision and dexterity of Olympic javelin throwers and at one point use a tree as a battering ram to break down a locked door!), and an uncompromisingly bleak ending, this deliciously dreadful doozy rates highly as an absolute rubbishy hoot and a half. Moreover, the alarming presence of singularly unnerving dwarf actor Peter Bark gives this picture an extra potent campy'n'creepy kick in the pants; Bark delivers a uniquely unsettling portrayal of Michael, a strange little boy whose uncomfortably incestuous relationship with his mother gets taken to its grimly logical (and disgusting) conclusion. In fact, Michael ultimately proves to be ten times more freaky and disturbing than the rot-faced ghouls! A terrifically tacky marvel.
"Professor Ayres" (Raimondo Barbieri) is a scientist who has invited some friends over to his mansion out in the country. However, just prior to their arrival he opens a crypt and reanimates the dead which subsequently kill him. Not long afterward his visitors arrive and the zombies go after them as well. So much for the plot. As far as the overall worth of the film is concerned, I will just say that there is plenty of action and gore. Likewise, being a Euro-horror movie there is also some sex and nudity. Unfortunately, the dubbing was extremely bad and this had a major impact on the movie. In that regard it was most noticeable during the scenes involving the very odd looking child named "Michael" (Peter Bark). Very odd indeed. Now, I have no doubt that some folks who enjoy cheap horror films loaded with action and gore will simply love this movie. Quite frankly, I thought it went on way too long and I was totally bored about halfway through. I rate it as below average.
