Yes, the majority of the plot seems to have ended up on the cutting room floor, the director uses filters instead of narrative, the acting is risible and the flow erratic. Not even the great Sir Patrick's voice is an asset. BUT The Harryhausen-esque monsters are a hoot. The whole thing seems to have been filmed in a small green-screen room for the price of a decent family meal. Accept and embrace it for what it is - a silly, cheap, nonsensical piece of trash with ridiculous monsters in it. My DVD copy cost 50 pence. A fair price.
SINBAD: THE FIFTH VOYAGE is a cheap retelling of the famous sailor that comes across as a tribute to the effects-filled Ray Harryhausen movies of old. Indeed, the various foes that Sinbad and his crew end up fighting seem to have been animated via good old-fashioned stop motion, just like in the old days, with the addition of some CGI to smooth the edges. It certainly makes for a lot of fun and brings back some of the glory days of the likes of THE 7TH VOYAGE OF SINBAD and JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS.Unfortunately, the rest of the film is very bad and little above the level of a homemade amateur flick like SAMURAI COP 2: DEADLY VENGEANCE. The whole thing plays out on a green screen with some terrible CGI effects and even worse acting. I didn't mind the lead actor Shahin Sean Soliman, who also wrote and directed, as he's unusually for this type of film an actor of genuinely Persian decent, but the rest is pretty much a waste of time.
If i could use three words to describe Sinbad fifth voyage, it would have to be: Retro, Fun, and Uniquely Indie....it's a total blast from the past. it moves right along, it's never boring, and the acting was good enough for me to sink my teeth into. This type of film uses the stop motion animation, although some people might find it crude and out dated by today's standards, but I am so sick of the over the top CGI in most movies that I found this very cool to see again. I thought the story was well plotted and well executed , and it's a timeless classic, so i guess it's no surprise it has just been remade.I thought the director shahin solimon did very well considering he was the lead as well. That can not be easy. i would say three thumbs up...great family fun. See it when you get a chance.
After reading all the football weird reviews on here, my mind was mixed. So I decided to check out Sinbad myself out at theaters cause of all the hype i was reading. I was of course worried to say the least. So at the theater I was not expecting to like it, just was curious. However I was pleasantly shocked and surprised when I got into it. WOW! Keep reading. My thoughts were, Sinbad the 5th voyage is a pleasant escape from modern films, it uses a combo of new VFX and traditional animation. A real reviewer would have noticed at least that part of this concept. Meaning some of the reviews seem to be, um-mm, shall we say 'not so sincere'?? lollAnyways, overall this is a great movie for young and old alike, and great experience and would recommended to anyone. 10+IF anyone has anything to say about this being a fake review you know where my mail box is.God bless and see you at the movies! :))
