Jake Huard, from a shipbuilders family, promised his dying mother he'ld make it to Anapolis Naval Academy. Thanks to tenaciously bugging a Congressman, he's selected despite dubious grades. Once inside, Jake soon proves sub-standard academically. Constantly challenged to his limits, repeatedly made the 'over-cocky' reason for the entire class to suffer, Jake nearly quits, but after facing his utterly un-supportive father's gloating returns just in time. Stubborn Jake finds support withs mates as well as Senor Ali, his lover-to-be, and a discipline he may excel in: the 'brigade' boxing tournament, open to all ranks.

This was a tale that didn't really need to be told. In fact, it was more of an advertisement for the navy than an actual movie. Franco does little to create a 3 dimensional character, and is not helped by being thrown into 2 hours of navy recruitment without first establishing why he's there, or why he's facing such adversity. Other weak plot points included the silly coincidental bar flirt...................which turned out to be a superior officer! What, no way! Who would have thought? Plus the entire end of the movie became a determination to win a boxing match, which was irrelevant to the previous plot of the movie - getting into the navy.
Well, you probably have already seen thousand of movies like that out there. The same old story: a dream's pursuit with moral lessons.Although having good cast, Annapolis is very badly written. For instance, how is Huard able to be admired from all his mates when he's an arrogant dude with a teenager mind? How doesn't Cole kick his ass when he behaves like he does? Cole is a man that could have all the authority he wanted, and he doesn't use it; and his rank and file instead of liking him for that, they show no respect. And what about the boxing scene? It's obvious that Tyrese would spank James Franco to death. You know, using Tyrese for Cole's character was a smart choice, but it feels like it was wasted. He could (and should) had been much more villainous than he was.Personal comment: it's impossible to not remember Scary Movie 4 in the boxing scene. Lmao.
This movie is really nice and entertaining. I wouldn't say it a real classic or something. But it is still worth your time. The trailers and promotions gave a completely wrong message to audience with a ship exploding etc. These promotions brought a very different kind of audience into the hall. That should be the reason for this low rating for this movie.Seeing the trailer I also thought it is a very action oriented navy movie. So I stayed away from this movie for some time. But when I got a chance to see this later, I was really surprised. It is not an action movie at all. But it has some real content in it. I would call it a very good entertainer supported by very good acting.Don't miss it.....
as someone who grew up in Annapolis and spent many years roaming around the academy (except the restricted areas of course) i was disappointed to see that nothing was actually filmed at the usna. the obstacle course shown in the movie was in a wooded area surrounded by trees...actually the real obstacle course was next to the Severn river and was totally in the open, i know because i have run it hundreds of times as a teenager. there are no shipyards within miles of the academy (at least not for battleships - just for small watercraft and personal boats) i did not see one shot of Tecumseh or john paul jones tomb or Halsey fieldhouse...huge landmarks of the grounds. the movie itself (aside from the accuracy of the "set" was terrible...poor acting, boxing action soooo inaccurate (no headgear? bye bye careers of the guys in charge - spend $200,000 on an education and lose the investment when someone gets turned into a vegetable boxing without gear? HAHA) no one goes anywhere in dress units without a hat on their head unless they wanna run for a month. try going to the academy next time and getting some help, although im sure filming wasn't allowed for reasons of national security.
