Julia (Jessica Lowndes) is a real estate reporter who wants to be a crime reporter, but is not allowed because she has pretty skin and no scars. Her boyfriend is Grady (Joe Anderson) a gumshoe who opens up imitating Sam Spade, which apparently was an act as it discontinues. When Julia's sister Amanda (Jackie Tuttle) is brutally murdered, the house is sold in less than a week and the the murder scene room is ripped out. Her investigation leads her to the small town of New English where she was originally from before her and her sister were adopted. Here she meets the town's strange residents and works to unlock its secrets...given away in the one line description of the film. The film is a mystery and a slow burn. We see enough of throw backs Grady and Julia but they never managed a good character building scene to make us connect with them. They were an item at one time and then split. We are spared the details. The twist ending I didn't see coming, although the unique subject matter made that difficult as there was no formula to follow. Kudos on the plot. The execution could have been better. I also couldn't get into the character of Jebediah Crone (Dayton Callie) who needed something like a scar or a hook and some lines.Abattoir is a slaughterhouse, something I didn't know. I love to have to look up titles.Guide: F-word. No sex or nudity. Killing is mostly done off scene, except for a few scenes.
This is the kind of movie that a select type of viewer will really appreciate. At the risk of perhaps not liking it very much, you may indeed be one of few who will love what this movie has to offer. At first I thought the movie was falling quite flat, but I stuck with it because slowly the plot began to unravel and bring up more questions than answers. If you want a film that is willing to do it's own thing, and take it all the way, you will be pleased with Abattoir.
Like many of your readers, I see a lot of films & check IMDb to see if a movie is worth downloading or not. Now to be honest I didn't read the reviews, just the high IMDb score. Having seen a large amount of horror films in the past few years, I've seen all kinds of stuff. This was a real surprise, a clever film. I hadn't heard of this Abattoir before. From the poster JPEG I thought this could be like Evil Dead remake/Sawish. After it's initial 15 minutes normally I would phase out, however that's when Abattoir started to kick in. Everything in the story plays smartly and is all concluded by the end. Oh my, the end! It finishes as it started. In conclusion, SEE THIS FILM.
I seriously wish there was a way to give negative numbers. This movie was awful. Nothing made sense. No consistency, and dragged on and on. You see the older woman from the Insidious movies and get excited thinking wow, this looks pretty good!!//NOPE! The main character although pretty to look at, was annoying. She dressed like a 50s pin up girl, drove an old car, making you wonder what year was this movie supposed to take place / yet had a smartphone on her car dashboard. The "villain" of the movie and the connections to her and the story made no sense and had no consistency. Save yourself some time and don't even think about watching this horrible excuse of a movie.
