You've heard of the Star War fans who have seen the movie 100 times. Well, I'm a Snatch fan who has seen this movie, well not a hundred times, but close to it. To me, It is one of those rare films that you can watch over and over again. In fact, I'm probably going to watch it again tonight. If you got this far in the IMDb post you have seen the remarkable cast as well some of the characters they played. Bullet Tooth Tony, Boris the Blade, Turkish, Frankie Four Fingers and Brick Top. And then there is Mickie O'Neil to top it off. Without getting into any spoilers, just watch the movie.
'Snatch (2000)' is an energetically eclectic, hyperactive yet occasionally unfocused comedy of errors in which whatever could go wrong does go wrong. It's a series of eventually intertwining parallel stories each centred around a stolen stone which feature a cast of colourful, mostly inept characters with slightly weird names and a mainly cockney lilt (aside from the Russian, the American and the sort-of-but-not-really Irish thing that Brad Pitt tries to do). It deals in stereotypes and the comedy is pretty broad, but the film isn't so much funny as it is exhaustively coincidental in a strangely compelling way, with the usually dumb-as-bricks characters making a major mistake only to run into someone (sometimes literally) who then fixes that mistake or changes their path entirely. It's not so much a straightforward narrative as one that keeps you guessing as to where it's going to go while simultaneously not mattering at all, as it's the individual situations themselves that entertain. The fact it all ties together in the end is, strangely, kind of a bonus. 7/10
After a Jewish gangster steals an 86-carat diamond from a jewellery exchange in Antwerp and returns to London, a whole variety of criminals suddenly decide that they want to get their hands on the precious stone and will stop at nothing to get what they want. This sets off the crazy chain of events that provides "Snatch" with its highly complicated plot that unfolds at high speed and delivers lots of laughs, snappy dialogue and copious amounts of violence. Its large cast of eccentric characters adds plenty of colour and profanity and the whole piece is so well-written and narrated that any conversational exposition is kept to an absolute minimum. When gambling addict Franky Four Fingers (Benicio Del Toro), who'd carried out the heist in Antwerp returns to London and decides that he wants to buy a gun, one of his gang members, who happens to be related to an ex-KGB agent called Boris the Blade (Rade Sherbedgia), puts Franky in touch with his relative who's also a gun dealer. The diamond heist had been masterminded by a shady New York businessman known as Cousin Avi (Dennis Farina) and Franky had been instructed to deliver the diamond to Avi's London associate, Doug the Head (Mike Reid). Knowing this, Boris realizes that he must relieve Franky of the diamond before it can be passed to Doug.Unlicensed boxing promoter Turkish (Jason Statham) arranges for one of his fighters to take part in a match that he's set up with fellow promoter and notorious crime boss Brick Top (Alan Ford) but when his fighter can't compete after being injured in a confrontation with an Irish gypsy called Mickey O'Neil (Brad Pitt), Turkish needs a replacement and the gypsy is the obvious choice. After striking a deal with Mickey and receiving instructions from Brick Top for the gypsy to take a dive in the forth round, the fight goes ahead but doesn't end as planned.Boris the Blade acquires a gun for Franky and offers to waive any payment for it on condition that Franky places a bet for him on a boxing match. Franky agrees to do this at a bookie's that's owned by Brick Top and Boris hires a gang of grossly incompetent criminals to steal the diamond which Franky keeps in a briefcase that's handcuffed to his wrist. Brick Top is not amused by what transpires at his betting shop and in order to save their skins, the gang that Boris hired also go in search of the diamond so that they can steal it for Brick Top. On hearing that Franky had gone missing, Cousin Avi immediately comes to London and he and Doug recruit Bullet Tooth (Vinnie Jones) to use his persuasive powers to locate Franky.Brick Top is a particularly vicious piece of work who imposes his will on other people by the use of threats and extreme violence but when he makes an enemy of Mickey, he completely underestimates the reaction of his adversary and the gypsy community and in so doing, makes the biggest mistake of his life."Snatch" is a lot of fun and although the influence of Quentin Tarantino is never far away, it's most noticeable during the diamond heist when the thieves indulge in an extended discussion about the consequences of a mistake made by the Septuagint scholars who incorrectly translated the Hebrew word for "young woman" into the Greek word for "virgin". Other examples follow when Brick Top gives an extended explanation of the meaning of the word "nemesis" and a full description of how effectively pigs can be used to dispose of dead bodies. The whole production is highly stylized and this brilliantly facilitates all the wackiness that's perpetrated by its large-than-life characters who are brought to life in a whole series of crazy, over-the-top performances. Rade Sherbedgia's eccentric facial contortions are a marvellous manifestation of Boris' lunacy, Dennis Farina's constant state of panic highlights Cousin Avi's extreme level of anxiety and Brad Pitt, with a strange hybrid accent that no-one can understand, is absolutely hilarious as the fighter whose actions are so spontaneous that even he doesn't seem to know what he might do next. With its frenetic pace, fast editing and colourful characters, "Snatch" is exceptionally energetic, action-packed and so full of humour that watching it becomes a breathless but also tremendously entertaining experience.
Turkish (Jason Statham), Tommy (Stephen Graham), Brick Top (Alan Ford), Bullet Tooth Tony (Vinnie Jones), Boris The Blade (Rade Serbedzija), Sol (Lennie James), Vinny (Robbie Gee), Tyrone (Ade), Gorgeous George (Adam Fogerty), Frankie Four Fingers (Benicio del Toro), Cousin Avi Denovitz and the list goes on. If that gaggle of unique character names and cast members does not spark your movie watching interest I don't know what will. These characters are just part of the many great elements that make up the movie "Snatch"; which landed the 100th spot on the "IMDb top 250" movies list. With a plot focused theme, this comedy/thriller takes us on an outing full of hilarious mischief, and it plays off the popular saying "trust no one". Fast paced and full of plot twist, we watch the main character Turkish become involuntarily involved in troublesome predicaments. Turkish and Tommy have their hands full trying to pay off a debt owed to the gangster Brick Top due to a boxing bet gone bad, because Mickey (their unruly prize fighter) not being able to follow directions. At the same time, we have the feud between Boris and Cousin Avi Denovtiz over a diamond heist performed by Frankie Four Fingers whom worked for Avi and was set up to be robbed by Boris. Boris the Blade's reputation for violence requires Avi to hire the hit-man Bullet Tooth Tony to help him retrieve his stolen diamond. Although Avi hired an able body to complete his task, Boris was not so fortunate when he hired the incapable Sol, Vinny and Tyrone to steal the stone from Frankie Four Fingers, and rob the bookies owned by the gangster Brick Top. Brick Top in turn puts on a search to find the 3 who attempted to rob his establishment, and they in turn give Brick Top knowledge of the diamond which he sends them to retrieve to avoid death. Whew! That's a lot going on. So, after many bullets fly, and hysterical interactions take place the movie comes full circle, and we end with the main character/narrator Turkish on top with the diamond, alongside his friend Tommy. "Snatch" is riddled with jump-cuts, witty fast paced dialogue, and subjective camera angles that help the audience stay interested, and feel like part of the film. Every scene plays into the plot, and any unneeded story/scenes are left out of the film. So, it is important for viewers to be attentive while watching the film or you will be sure to miss amusing conversations, and key moments. The angles help you engage in the conversation as they seem to be in first person view and the cut back and forth between the characters. Guy Richie used the same style and plot driven theme in his other film "Locked, Stocked, and Two Smoking Barrels". We also see some of the same actors such as Jason Statham and Vinnie Jones in this film too, but it was missing Brad Pitt who puts on a noteworthy performance as Mickey in "Snatch". Though quite comical Snatch is most certainly an adult film. Although some parts of the movie can be considered grisly, it still manages to put a funny spin on murder, and deception (I know that sounds a little crazy). Between a botched robbery, which included a getaway driver who can barely fit in his own car, Brick Top's passion for pigs, and Bullet Tooth Tony's different but effective way of handling his victims, you will get a fair share of laughing at illegal activities. If you are a person who loves movies that are plot driven, fast paced, and packed with charismatic dialogue be sure to watch "Snatch" when you get a chance. This movie will not disappoint.
