The soundtrack was what totally melted me on this one. The soundtrack was what carried the entire movie and chemistry. Add to that the special reference to the local legend of the church in San Antonio Texas. Joanna Going is beautiful. She reminded me so much of Alyssa Milano and Shannen Doherty on the early years of Charmed (tv series). I just wished the movie used the long hair she had in the poster. But most important of all was Brendan Fraser's face and biceps. Nobody else could have pulled off Fletcher's character more than Brendan ever could. I'm glad this movie was done during Brendan Fraser's heyday! Viva La 90s! Some critics (or cynics I may say)complained about the lack of chemistry between the two actors. But the doubting and quietly brooding beauty of Roz and the nerdy pseudo macho charm of Fletcher (and the way they kiss) was just quite the opposite. It was perfect. The ending with the piano sound background felt like it was in a dream and I didn't want it to end. I loved it. Though it was underrated, it was actually a good romantic movie.
I was channel surfing one Saturday afternoon in '05 and fell into the last half of this film. I was hooked! I called a store manager of Blockbuster to help me find this movie for purchase in all their stores back in '05 and she had one VHS left on the sales shelf. There are no more reprints of this for retail sale unfortunately. After watching the movie in its entirety, it was heartwarming. Truly a 'feel good' movie to cheer you up. This movie is beautifully done. The scenes and story line just flows wonderfully to blend into a great story line. Excellent direction from beginning to end. Finally, a movie with a great ending! Joanna Going and Brendan Fraiser are great together. It's one of my favorites. It touches the heartstrings. It may see like a chic-flick but guys would enjoy this too. The mystery and comedic aspects throughout make it lightheartedly touching to watch. The whole concept of how to find your true love has always been a mystery. This movie touches upon that. If only men do find their true love this way it would make a great reality-TV series. (LOL) The SOUNDTRACK is excellent. It's a shame they stopped printing this movie for retail sale. (http://stillbreathing.com/) They really should re-release this and sell more of the DVDs (at a reasonable price). It's too excellent of a movie to sit on a shelf or sell on the streets. Now and then cable movie channels air this but it's rare. If you get an opportunity to watch this movie, it is indeed, a true treasure of a film. I highly recommend it.
Cynics and idiots have dismissed this movie as "unrealistic" or "a boring chick flick." Too bad. They just don't get it.This is a romantic comedy in the old style, where a lovable eccentric dreams of his one true love and goes to seek her out. Naturally, she turns out to be fallen woman with a heart of gold. Where in the twenties this might have lead to "zany comedy" this is more like a poem--soft and romantic and sweet. Visually, musically, emotionally it is beautiful--not stunningly beautiful like a sunset, but warm and beautiful and familliar like like a hidden garden you happen upon for the first time, sure you have dreamt about a place just like this. We would all like to believe (at least I hope we would) in true love. The folks who dismiss this movie are like the heroine, Ros: cynical, hard edged and business like, with no room for dreams or fantasies in their cold cruel realistic worlds. But in the end Ros gets it. She allows herself to dream and to believe. Pity those morons who don't.Movies aren't about "realism." They're about fantasy. This one rocks.
Passable film concerning a cynical woman who dreams of true love while fleecing hand picked lovers. Mistaken identity leads her on a path of discovery, learning there's more to life than money and things. Real fiction, not real life.
