K-Pax is a planet 1,000 light years away and it is where prot (Kevin Spacey) insists he is from. He is admitted to the Psychiatric Institute of Manhattan where Dr. Mark Powell (Jeff Bridges) examines him. He finds a number of tests validate his claims rather than discredits them. prot can see ultraviolet light, few humans can. A commonly used medication for mental patients has no effect on him. All very interesting, but does it mean anything? Is prot from K-Pax or just another person who has slipped into the mental abyss? Fascinating story, there is very little in this film that will lead you to the answer until you are drawn in. Not a movie for younger children, adult themes.
If you enjoy a well acted, stylishly directed & photographed movie, with a story-line that leaves you high and dry, then K-PAX could fill all these categories. Just don't expect any conclusive explanations for what's happening – it's all ambiguous, even at times frustrating. British born Director Lain Softly and his British born director of photography John Mathieson, work extremely well with their excellent performers: Kevin Spacey as a 'possible' visitor from another planet & Jeff Bridges as the doctor committed to finding out if he's just another psychologically messed up earthling. Composer Ed Shearmur keeps the music sparkling along with the visuals.Problem is, the original story is totally inconclusive. While it forces us to examine some important human failings it will leave some unfulfilled in overall story elements. Screenplay writer Charles Leavitt, who worked so well on "The Mighty" in '98, tries hard to involve the viewer but the original story leaves him with no hope of any closure. Many situations are familiar from several other movies and interestingly, director Eliseo Subiela sued the writer (Gene Brewer) and filmmakers of K-PAX for Plagiarism because of similarities to his "Man Facing Southeast" from 1986. Many will enjoy this one but those wanting a solid end may be disappointed. It's never boring but with so much unexplained - sort of seems to end up as if it's not particularly going anywhere.
Sometimes a movie comes out that takes your breath away. This is such a movie, the cast are excellent, Bridges and Spacey scenes alone are worth the price. The visuals with light is mesmerizing, Iain Softly the director did a wonderful job, especially with the lighting, casting and choice of composer for the music. Edward Shearmuir is a great composer. His music blends so well with the abstract of the story line, intensifies at the appropriate tense scenes and just does the job. The story is very cleverly crafted to keep the viewer guessing right until the end and, even then, no definitive answer is given. However I would like to think there are enough clues and signs as the tale unfolds to point to the more extraordinary possibility as being the case. At the end of the day, if aliens really did travel to our planet from great distances, they could only do so by means we cannot even begin to comprehend. Once here, they are more likely to take form or a host which allows them to exist among us, than arrive in V style spaceships. There is a lot to learn from this film (which, although not as detailed as the book, is better that the book for mystery and realism). I loved this film from the start (even the music is excellent); it is a slow, unfolding mystery that manages to install different emotions and feelings within the audience. You don't have to like Sci-Fi to enjoy this film - there is something for everyone in it, and a lot to learn and think about. What we do in life, how we treat people and how we live our lives is the central theme for me. If someone is mad, does that make them less of a person? Does science, medical test and medication have all the answers? Happiness is a road, it is happening now, trap the spark and hold it there, you won't be disappointed. This provoking film is one that will stay with you for a long time after seeing it and is even better the second time.Overall rating: 9 out of 10.
I am into many science fiction movies with all the aliens and humans fighting to win wars and all. But this one is totally different. Kevin Spacey is the man! He played the role at ease to guess his moves almost each and every second. The movie may seem to end but it has some open ended questions about the real prot, the missing patient and the sudden loss of consciousness near the end.If you think deeply, you will have the answer. I don't want to reveal more about this. Just go and watch! This is an entirely different science fiction.
