I watched this entirely in french so i cannot comment on any of the dialogue but i dont think it mattered in this, its not hard to understand, it was a sad movie and i thought that the torture scenes would be too much for me but i handled it fine because the man was so awful, what he did to the little girl was so awful, i really felt for the husband and wife, especially the husband, the acting was wonderful even without English subtitles, i was immersed in the story and felt pain along with the parents(obviously nothing compared to what parents actually feel in this situation ) so i cried my eyes out when he sees his daughters ghost and unties her and washes her, it was so .. gentle and i knew he wished so bad that he could of done this for her , i also noticed that the deer seemed to be some sort of symbol, like how it was dead and he tried to bury it like he was trying to bury the pain of his daughters death and find a way to avenge her death and the view of the deers body decayed further even after he tried to bury it kind of felt like it was part of his emotions and went together with him torturing the man and dealing with his hatred and sorrow and trying to fight through the indignity of his daughter death sorry its hard to explain but i think it all was connected .
First review I've made of a film but this was so incredibly boring I felt I had to say something...I spent the entire film WAITING for something to happen. Spoiler? It never does. Don't watch this expecting graphic violence; beyond a broken knee and one cut everything else is skipped out and implied. Prefer to watch for a story? None. How about character? Dull as paint! The main character, a doctor, is brilliantly clever but does...nothing. Really pointless with no clear message. Gave it a 2/10 generously due to the fact that the quality of the filming was actually decent. If you want to waste this much time for a cleverly artistic view of forests and a guy drinking beer, sleeping in his own vomit (or a candid shot of a naked guy being chained to the floor) your choice. Much better ways to waste your life away.
*VERY MINOR SPOILERS!* The French never fail to amaze me with their films. With masterpieces like Inside, Martyrs, Frontier(s) etc. I was excited from the moment I heard about 7 Days and what I anticipated was excelled.I was worried that 7 Days would be limited on plot. I thought that it might just be a man torturing a paedophile using sadistic, gory methods and that would be it. Like the Japanese film "Grotesque" banned in England. Actually what I got was the opposite. Podz focuses on the characters and story a hell of a lot more than the gore. The torture sequences simply aid the story and help us to understand the protagonist's actions. In fact, "7 Days" carries very little torture at all. Don't get me wrong their are a few brutal moments but they aren't that bad, and to be honest (just because I'm slightly sick) I would've liked a bit more, some torture isn't shown but is clearly done (you'll see what I mean). But the film didn't really need gore. The film carried beautifully in-depth character studies making the film interesting and compelling to watch. The deer metaphor is brilliant as well. If fact the film is wonderfully written, despite very little dialogue being spoken. The film looks incredible as well, it looks lifeless, grey, dull which fits it superbly with the themes expressed. No music is played EVER! Adding to the terrifying realism the film possesses. Performances by the frogs are superb as well. It feels real and real gritty. And the film ends perfectly.Basically its a masterpiece.
This movie clearly defines the revenge thriller genre. As a superb standout from Canada, it delivers a myriad of emotions from a plethora of angles. It takes you on a journey inside your own mind as you compare the emotions of those affected in the movie, and compare them to emotions you think you might feel if something as horrific as the initial crime should (heaven forbid) happen in your everyday normal life. The plot is simple, the direction is stark and unwavering, and the story is beautifully acted by all the players. What a gem! One more thing. Of all the lame movies you read the reviews on, and the reviewer laments about never getting his/her '2 hours back' - you won't read any such nonsense about this flick. I highly recommend it. 10/10
