Originally released under the title "Urban Explorers."Four foreigners hire a tour guide (Max Riemelt) to explore the tunnels and bunkers under the city of Berlin. Things don't go as planned as one might surmise from the cover and the title. The underground aspect of the film was interesting. The capture, fight, and torture doesn't start until late in the film. While it was gory, the plot was light, formulaic, and the bad guy was incomplete. The meaning between the various tales and the bunker with our torturer didn't connect too well.Parental Guide: F-bomb. No sex, or nudity (one nude painting).
College kids on vacation in Germany decide to do some thrill seeking. They do this by enlisting a tour guide that takes them underground through the various tunnels built during the time of Nazi Germany. The movie sounds strangely like something out of "So far Above, As Below". However, the premise is slightly different as it follows along the lines of Hostel. Some foreshadowing leads the audience into a sense of false belief as to what will happen and the movie plays out nicely to effect. The entire movie was no surprise once all was revealed; but I couldn't help but be left with wondering if there shouldn't have been more or if the movie shouldn't have been longer. I recommend the movie to those that like the "Saw" and "Hostel" series; otherwise the gore may be a bit too much.Originally posted to Orion Age (http://www.orionphysics.com/? p=8025).
Agreeing to accompany a friend into the underground Nazi bunkers beneath Berlin, a group of ravers find themselves stalked and mercilessly killed by a deranged border guard upset over the German reunification and must find a way to stop him and get out alive. This was an overall enjoyable and entertaining effort, though it does have some flaws present. One of the biggest ones here is the fact that there's just no end to the stupidity running rampant through the characters, which really takes a lot out of the film. The fact that there's a series of signs prohibiting their continually journey throughout the underground yet continuing to press on forward, failing to recognize the unstable psychopath in their company is a deranged lunatic, continuing to stay in one location that allows the killer who knows the facility quite well and is able to get the drop on them numerous times over to get the upper hand and the irritating feature of continuing to stay in the facility rather than escape after having momentarily knocked him out yet fail to finish him off makes for a series of rather stupid sequences which do hold this one down somewhat. As well, the beginning is a little all over the place with an excruciating set-up to get them to the bunker as they stop every five minutes to tell a story about the Nazi's or to discuss why they're down there which gets old after a while, as well as the pointless encounter with the hunters underground hiding out that just eats up time needlessly. The fact that these don't really hamper the pace of the film nor the overall enjoyment, though, is a great plus and manages to keep this one from becoming quite painful to sit through as once the group gets to the bunker, it becomes all the more enjoyable with a non-stop series of tense stalking scenes, unbelievable brutal kills and a demented, deranged streak throughout that serves it well and really generates a bleak, hopeless future throughout that any good slasher really employs where it's going to be nearly impossible to escape that this taps into incredibly well, as the subsequent chase through the subway station really shows quite well. These make the film feel a lot better than it's troubled start and gives this one it's best features.Rated Unrated/R: Extreme Graphic Violence, Graphic Language and Brief Nudity.
In a way I can almost understand it (the current 5.0 rating), its a movie that is in your face, non apologetic, and genuinely creepy.. Probably only half the people who watch it can handle it.. And just a little note here people: towards the second half of the movie, the main language spoken is German... So put on the English subtitles ;) The main premise of the film is 3 women and a man (one of the women is his girlfriend) and a tour guide going into the underground tunnels of Nazi Germany era.. Hence the title Urban Explorers... That ALONE is scary! One thing I want to say this film did AMAZINGLY is get me very interested in the German history of the Nazi and Berlin Wall eras.. I found myself enthralled by the stories the characters shared in this film..Now I wont lie.. This movie is a take it or leave it experience, it is a graphic (visually and psychologically), brutal, creepy, hellish, half German film.. And in all honesty I almost did not like it, but I found myself hours after the viewing completely fixated on the movie.. Why did that happen, why did they do that... HOW COULD they do that... Only a film of excellent caliber can stick with you for a long while after finishing it... Overall I recommend.. Watch with subtitles, in a dark room (It sort of makes it scarier) FINALLY; Here are my first impressions on the characters all of whom were played to perfection by amazingly gifted young actors and actresses: Tour Guide: Seems like a pretty smart dude who knows his way around Daniel: Seems like a calm guy... Daniel's Girlfriend: Nurse, very attractive French Woman: VERY attractive, a little bit of a ditz Oriental Woman: Not attractive. (LOL)
