The Beatles first project after the death of manager Brian Epstein was this half-length psychedelic TV movie which garnered a hostile press reaction when first aired on Boxing Day 1967. Epstein's death apart it should have been a crowning glory to a great year for the group which saw their music hit new heights, but its bittiness and wackiness missed the mark with the mainstream population and as has been said before showed that yes, they could do wrong.Looked at today, one wonders a little what the fuss was about. An eccentric mix of no-doubt drug-induced buffoonery, saucy British sea-side humour and Goons-inspired craziness, it's no masterpiece and probably best viewed as a series of loosely connected sketches in the later style of say, Spike Milligan's Q series or of course Monty Python. Of course it would have helped if said sketches were funny or more tightly edited. The fantasy musical sequences are the best, especially the video clips for McCartney's underrated "The Fool On The Hill" and Lennon's blockbuster "I Am The Walrus", but the white-dress suit finale is terrible, Paul dragging the others into his love affair with vintage Hollywood musicals. The Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band, in fact, almost steal the show with their camp Elvis spoof "Death Cab For Cutie"There's not much acting on display and one would doubt there was ever a working script but the colour cinematography is very good, the music obviously is ace and as rock star indulgences go it's not the worst and makes a virtue of its brevity.
Magical Mystery Tour is an hour-long TV movie starring The Beatles - John Lennon,Paul McCartney,George Harrison and Ringo Starr. It was based on a loose unscripted narrative, this experimental film was directed by The Beatles themselves and it was the vehicle to present 6 new songs namely: Magical Mystery Tour, The Fool On The Hill, Flying, I Am The Walrus, Blue Jay Way and Your Mother Should Know. In the movie, the Beatles decided to hire a psychedelic bus, take a trip into the English countryside, and film the results, no matter how bizarre or boring. With a motley cast of characters, the group basically tramps about the landscape with occasional music cues to give the film a bit of flow. This is definitely a must-see for Beatles buffs and anyone interested in how the '60s looked as they were happening. But as a film itself,it was nearly impossible to watch as there is nothing that really happens except killer numbers from the Fab Four.It was mainly all about their music and nothing more.
The Beatles takes us on a long and psychedelic road trip with their "Magical Mystery Tour", a happy, cheerful and unusual road movie whose point is to be happy and incomprehensible. If you're feeling down this film and the music will make you better but don't wait for a conventional musical film. Here we have The Beatles on a bus along with eccentric passengers such as Ringo's aunt (played by Jessie Robins) and a dwarf photographer (George Claydon) going to weird places, colored locations and unusual situations, sometimes dreaming, other times not, and of course, listening to songs that goes for the "Magical Mystery Tour Theme" to "I am the Walrus" and others. It's not bad as people say, but it's certainly not an experience where everybody can get something of positive, it depends on your views of films and what you like. To me, Beatles can't go wrong although this tour is very messy, sometimes it makes no sense at all unless you're high or drunk (which might be a great experience while viewing this film, it might work better). Here's four guys having a nice time, doing their best while acting and playing songs, having a moment of happiness and happiness is a great thing, specially if displayed on film which is quite rare. Might not have a purpose, it doesn't make too much sense but it's pretty decent and very watchable. 9/10
Weird weired weird, this movie was a disappointment to me really. Over the last few weeks I have watched 3 Beatles Movies at College: A Hard Day's Night, Help, and this one! The first too were simply fab but this one not so much. The music as per usual was Brilliant and John Lennon is a total legend in this movie as he was in all (RIP JOHN + GEORGE) and I loved his hat in it lol!! But otherwise the magic wasn't working for me sorry! The whole film was a waste of time really, there was no plot, it was all over the place and it was like taking a drug trip! But i'm being a bit harsh...the music was fab and the Beatles acting was great! The songs were brilliant and the lyrics ' I am the egg man, they are the egg men, I am the walrus' stuck in my head for days lol! OK Film, but a total flop compared to the iconic A Hard Days Night and Help!! However I Love the Beatles, they were simply magical!! 6/10 SORRY!!
