The director stays true to the book story and that is somthing that I really respect. Reading the book before watching the movie made me more careful to the detail in the movie, and I can say that the story is the same with just a very few minor changes. The age of the four main characters was a bit off, since they were supposed to be younger than the actors that played them, but the four actors were made for the roles. Perfect fit. The movie may not be made for those who are not aquainted with a bit more violante movies, since tehre are some scenes which may not be for very young viewers, but it is a great thing to watch with family.
It was great to see an award winning book turned into a solid children's fantasy film. Especially to kick off the first movie in the Narnia franchise. I never would have guessed the movie was from 2005 considering that the special effects were so exceptional. The casting I believe was just as good. Tilda Swinton made a great White Witch and Liam Neeson nailed his role as Aslan capturing the selfless beast he was meant to be. Though the movie was fairly long, certain scenes did move rather quickly. Select portions of the story line passed by too quickly in the film like the ending fight scene between the White Witch's army and that of Aslan's. Also, more time could have been put into the training of Peter becoming a warrior instead of him hardly knowing how to use a sword against a wolf in one scene and being able to slay many of the witch's experienced army himself the next. All in all, it was still a great movie that I enjoyed very much and I'm looking forward to seeing the latest expansion in the franchise, The Silver Chair.
Sure, the special effects are pretty good, but you expect that, considering the massive budget. But, most of the rest of the film is not. The tone of this movie completely ruins the style of the book, and instead uses the tone of an average blockbuster action movie. One big problem that changes the tone is the soundtrack. We get an unmemorable soundtrack that is over the top, clichéd, loud, blaring and simply annoying. They also overuse the soundtrack. There is basically an unmemorable, over the top, clichéd, loud blaring, annoying song every two minutes. It also affects the flow of the movie.Another thing that this movie fails at is character development. This film has close to none, and you don't really care for the characters because of that. In fact, I wanted Peter, Edmund and Lucy to get killed off by the White Witch, just to finish the tortuous movie. This movie also tries too hard to be dark and scary, but fails miserably. You do not understand the pain and suffering of Narnia in this film, because the filmmakers do not care to put in enough depth and character development for us to care. So, the director says, "Don't worry, we'll get great reviews! We'll just add a bit of awesome special effects here and there!"But...I thought the White Witch in this film was quite good. The acting from her was decent, and the makeup and costume was up to standard. I didn't mind most of the casting, but I didn't like the casting of Lucy, as I thought her acting skills were a bit off. But it wasn't too bad. Overall, if you don't mind a badly paced, clichéd, loud action packed movie, you may like this. But if you're looking for a good film, I suggest you stay away. The metascore is a joke, however. 4.3/10.
I just re-watched this movie. I loved it when I was a kid and I love it now. It is a wonderful movie to watch, especially around Christmas time. The movie is a bit cheesy at times, but you have to remember that this movie is targeted at kids, so I don't hold that against it. The music is fantastic as well. I bought the sound track because I enjoyed it so thoroughly. I enjoyed reading the books when I was younger and seeing the books come to life in a well done manner is great. I look forward to sharing this with my kids one day. Also, it helps that Liam Neeson is in this film because I generally enjoy his movies. Finally, who doesn't love a movie that has talking animals?
