Larry Daley needs to get a job quickly if his ex-wife is to allow him to keep seeing his son; he finds a job working as the night-watchman at a New York museum. It turns out that it is no ordinary museum; each night all of the exhibits come to life! This means he has to contend with a rampaging T-Rex skeleton, assorted animals, Attila the Hun as well as miniature cowboys and Romans who want to fight each other. He does get some help though; from a waxwork of Teddy Roosevelt. He learns that the strange goings on are due to a valuable Egyptian tablet. After his first night he is ready to quit but doesn't because of his son; after the second he is almost fired then on the third night he invites his son to see his work this will be his toughest night yet as he must unite the living exhibits to thwart a robbery. This film is good harmless fun that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. The story is fun with plenty of laughs and a tension without being too scary. There is no offensive material beyond the sight of a monkey urinating on Larry. The special effects are really rather good making it easy to suspend disbelief and accept that everything has come to life. Ben Stiller does a fine job as Larry, a believable ordinary man caught up in an extraordinary situation. He gets fine support from Robin Williams as Roosevelt; and plenty of other familiar actors including Dick Van Dyke, Steve Coogan, Owen Wilson and Ricky Gervais amongst others. Overall I'd say that I enjoyed this more than I would and would recommend it to anybody wanting some family friendly entertainment.
A newly recruited night security guard at the Museum of Natural History discovers that an ancient curse causes the animals and exhibits on display to come to life and wreak havoc. Night at the Museum is the first of the 3 films in the Museum Trilogy and stars Ben Stiller and Robin Williams and although the film received mostly mixed reviews i still found it to be very entertaining and relaxing and although the humor is for sure silly it's a film that was mostly made for kids and their parents and if you know what you're getting into you are going to enjoy this movie a lot plus all the actors did a great job with the material that was given to them and the special effects looked pretty believable and kids will definitely love this movie. (8/10)
The problem with Night at the Museum is that I have now seen it twice and very little sticks out apart from the three veteran actors playing not so very good guys. It throws in elements of Jumanji, Jurassic Park and even Gulliver's Travels with extensive use of CGI to create a family film. It is still by the numbers storytelling which only the kids will enjoy and wastes some good actors.Ben Stiller plays Larry Daley, a down on his luck, divorced father who gets a job as a night security guard at the Museum of Natural History. He gets a crash course from the old guys he is replacing but to his surprise thanks to an ancient Egyptian tablet the exhibits come to life at night and create havoc.Stiller needs to get control and put the exhibits back in place by sunrise. On the first night he gets help from Teddy Roosevelt played by Robin Williams. The film is mainly about the various tricks the exhibits get up to when they come alive. A wild T Rex, a cheeky monkey, mini Roman soldiers bickering with mini cowboys. However it turns out that Stiller has walked into a trap as there are plans to steal the tablet.Dick Van Dyke, Mickey Rooney and Bill Cobbs play the retiring security guards but I think the filmmakers missed a trick by not having them being rather zany and wacky. Its rather unnerving to see Rooney giving mean looks to Stiller right from the off, which kinds of gives the game away. The film is not really that funny. In fact its mildly irritating from Ricky Gervais's curator to Stiller's ex-wife. It is even silly but kids seem to have enjoyed it enough for it to spawn two sequels.
Night at the Museum is a fantastic movie with a very well developed storyline and a brilliant cast. The movie is dramatic, funny and also takes you on a fun and crazy adventure, which will keep people glued to their seat all the way through.Ben Stiller is great in the lead and he is also joined by an outstanding supporting cast, which includes the great Robin Williams,Owen Wilson,Dick Van Dyke,Ricky Gervais, among many others. The effects are absolutely beautiful and you can tell from start to finish that a lot of time, money and dedication was put in to making this film.Fun for the whole family and a wild ride,I would recommend Night at the Museum to anyone looking for a good family or adventure film.
