Jeremy Northam plays a corporate spy caught between two rival firms in a cyberpunk future where he's not always quite sure who he's working for, who's on his side, or even of his own identity. Lucy Liu plays a femme fatale of sorts who helps (or is she manipulating?) Northam. It's a clever twisting plot, though the film suffers some from it's limited budget and suffers more so from under developed characters, which made me less interested in what happens to them. These strengths and weaknesses were also true of writer/director Vincenzo Natali's previous film "Cube" (he also later directed the underrated "Splice"). Overall, the Byzantine plot is so clever and so much smarter than most science fiction films, it makes this film well worth checking out by sci-fi fans despite it's deficiencies.
Been waiting a while to see this psychological sci-fi thriller of a man named (originally) Morgan who find himself undercover doing a risky job for a more bigger corporation.I think the cinematography, done by Derek Rogers, was excellent. Really was experimental in a way. I liked a lot of the fish-eye shots and ones where the frame was off its axis. The acting is probably what brought it down the most. I have seen director Vincenzo Natali's Cube, which obviously didn't have the strongest of talent in it, but they story made it all worth watching.**Same with this film! The story is beyond our comprehension. I'd say that it is not as simple as Cube, but it definitely has more are to branch out to and discover.-- Michael MendezP.s. - Goodnight
Morgan Sullivan (Jeremy Northam) leaves his boring suburban life to take a job as an industrial spy at Digicorp. He goes to conventions to record presentations. He meets the mysterious Rita Foster (Lucy Liu) and he's pulled into an ever confusing world of competing corporate espionage. This has a great surreal paranoid feel. However some of it has to be attributed to the complicated mess of relationships. It's twist upon twist until the movie stops being compelling. The style is still interesting. Northam and Liu are both good. Director Vincenzo Natali continues to show some fascinating ideas.
A cult movie, nuff said. The casting was strange yet workable, the music was forgettable. But the more I watch it, the more I like it. A great indirect story about identity and modern society.I liked the color in which the movie is slightly tainted, reminder of a film noir and yet with a modern twist (kind of a Minority Report set and feeling). The story unfolds gently and every part has a proper function of the whole. It's perhaps about how your life can turn into something else... and still be part of you. Fully recommended!
