American journalist Paul Kemp takes on a freelance job in Puerto Rico for a local newspaper during the 1960s and struggles to find a balance between island culture and the expatriates who live there. The big problem for me with The Rum Diary was the direction and the script it self many things could have been handled better for example the whole thing with Kemp and Sanderson or even the whole love story with Sanderson's girlfriend Chenault, it's also not very funny you might chuckle once or twice but that's it and even the scene with the car wasn't as funny as i hoped. As far as acting goes Johnny Depp and Giovanni Ribisi the rest of the cast was alright there's no stand out performances by anyone else but they were just there nothing more. It's far better than the trailer made it look like but the troubled script and direction, poor comedy and the fact that nothing happens take the premise away and i'm sure that they cut a lot of stuff from the book but like i said the actors did fine with their characters and it's not that boring as a film but don't except much from it i'll give it an a 7.1/10.

This movie has some redeeming moments, but overall is just so-so. Seems ACTED. Not natural or all that convincing. The film goes in a lot of directions, but not one single direction. And didn't I see Johnny Depp be this character before in Fear and Loathing? Now that was a good movie. This one isn't. I saw this movie on a cold rainy day while visiting Montreal. I remember the seats at that theater being wildly uncomfortable and the only thing that kept me from walking out of this film was the fact that it was crappy outside and this movie was the best choice of the bunch. Overall, I think both me and this movie both wanted to find a more comfortable theater and go watch something else.

10 years Prior to this Johnny Depp was one of my favourite actors. Then came the character of Captain Jack Sparrow, and with it came endless sequels every couple of years, and (aside from a few roles like "Finding Neverland" and "Sweeney Todd") uninspired performances in average movies (The Tourist) Now he probably doesn't even rank in my Top 10. Based on the novel of the same name by Hunter S. Thompson, I was hoping this would be a return to form. "The Rum Diary" started off well with Dean Martin crooning "Volare" over the opening credits. But whilst not quite a return to form, it has some good moments and Depp's heart is clearly in the right place, in what is clearly a passionate project for him, based on his close friends work. But I think Hollywood got in the way of him making a great movie. Michael Rispoli, Aaron Eckhart, Giovanni Ribsi, Amber Heard and all give good solid support to Depp, but my main problem comes from the direction, which is uninspiring despite great source material.

When I bought a CD of this movie I was so excited, because I thought: "Wow,finally I bought it!". But. There is one thing. It wasn't so good than I expected. That's why I gave 8 points for this movie. It's not the best or one of the best movies I have ever watched, but it wasn't very very bad. "The rum diary" was quite interesting movie and the plot is not bad. Actors were good I think. There were some really funny moments.I'm not Bruce Robinson's fan,but I can say that he is a successful novels' and biographical novels' author. Actually I have never read the book "The rum diary" but I would like to and I think that perhaps novel is better than movie. So it's only my opinion. All people are different and their opinions are different. In conclusion I want to say that actors in the movie are good, director is good too. If You have time, watch this movie. Perhaps it will be the best movie for You,because our opinions are usually different. So I want to wish a nice evening with this movie,I hope You'll like it and You'll give 10 points for "The rum diary".
