Both had previously starred together as father-and-son crime solvers in the TV series Diagnosis: Murder. Barry Van Dyke's son Shane Van Dyke appears in two of the films as Ben Manners, Mike Bryant's nephew who was studying to be a lawyer and brings more technological aspects to the sleuthing.
