AFI: I Heard a Voice
I Heard a Voice is the first live DVD from AFI that was released on December 12, 2006. The concert was filmed at the Long Beach Arena in Long Beach, California on Friday, September 15, 2006. Part of the Decemberunderground Tour, the crowd was the largest AFI had ever headlined with over 13,000 people in attendance. The title of this DVD is lifted from a line of poetry in the decemberunderground CD booklet. Underneath the song 37mm, it says: "The power went out. I turned on the radio. The power went out. I turned on the radio. The power went out. I turned on the radio....I heard a voice." The moth on the case is also from the decemberunderground booklet.

I thought maybe it was just old age creeping up on me. The Jimi Hendrix that I remember from my youth sounded a whole lot better than what I saw on this DVD. I thought I had just changed my tastes and wasn't into his songs anymore. Then I read some reviews here....and I feel better. It wasn't me: it was this concert - it sucked!I just wanted to have something on film of one of the most famous guitar players of all time, so I thought this long concert would do it.Well, this disc has already been traded for something else. All it turned out to be was noise, which was really disappointing considering the songs I liked best from him were all included in this concert. Unfortunately, they were hardly recognizable. If anyone knows of a really good Hendrix DVD, please PM me. Thanks.

When Hendrix played this show, the years of drug abuse began to show on him. This is generally regarded as one of his worst performances and you can tell by the quality of his playing. Also, he was beginning to forget the words to his own songs. Hendrix should not have performed at this show but he needed the money to finish construction on the Electric Lady studios in New York. Too bad he died before it was finished and before he could make beautiful music in the premier studio he had especially built.

First of all, Jimi Hendrix did NOT WANT to play this concert and you can really tell while watching this. Hendrix was a great guitarist and showman, but the sound out of this performance is terrible! Unlike Hendrix's earlier, enthusiastic concerts, this concert misses the mark by looking (and sounding) very tired and uninspired throughout, DIE HARD JIMI FANS WILL LOVE THIS, but if your just interested in the man, I wouldn't suggest buying this video as it's hardly the best introduction to Jimi Hendrix. BUY JIMI HENDRIX LIVE AT WOODSTOCK for his best live performance and enthusiastic playing. (and of course there is THAT version of THE STAR SPANGLED BANNER! lol)

One of my many regrets in life is not being old enough to have seen performers like Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, Janis Joplin etc. perform live. But thanks to video, one can see what it was like it the late 60's-early 70's, to have gone through all the turmoil that was going on back then. The world as a whole is a better is not only a place, but only exists because of dreamers like Jimi Hendrix, David Crosby and John Lennon. The list goes on and on. This is a great movie, probably not his (Jimi's) best performance ever, although I consider it a great performance, it is still so moving because he (Jimi) passed away so soon after this movie was filmed. I revere Jimi, Jim, Janis, Keith, Duane, Berry, and all who have gone before us to give us the music that inspires and moves us every day of our lives.
