Bloody Birthday is a old school horror film from the 80's and is a children horror film and one rare, good one. Bloody Birthday revolves around three kids born during a solar eclipse and were born without emotion or like something and 10 years later, they begin to kill family members and friends. Bloody Birthday is a very good original film that I saw years back and still need to rewatch. If there's a favourite child horror film for me,this would'int be best,BUT,one. Bloody Birthday is a great horror film I advise you to see if you like good slasher horror films
As a fan of "The Bad Seed" movie and book I had to see this movie. Instead of 1 we have now 3 kids who were born during a full moon. That's actually the only reason that is given why they do lack a conscience. Fine with me, "The Bad Seed" never explained why Rhoda was born evil anyway. As expected BB went for a higher killing rate which were all shown on screen (The Bad Seed all happened of screen in comparison). But it definitely isn't slasher as little detail is shown. Okay the killings are somehow entertaining but the movie lacks in story and character development. The only ones who are somehow developed and actually bothering to find out who does the killing and get suspicious about the 3 are Joyce (played by the beautiful Lori Lethin) and her little brother Timmy. The 3 bad kids do a good job especially Curtis (Billy Jayne is also the only one getting a real film career after this) the kid with glasses who seems pretty eager to go for killings and doesn't fear to act out on his own without help from the other 2. He seems smart but towards the end gets a bit too confident. Than there is blonde Steven who is easily the least interesting. He has that mean look on his face but he is actually a follower, never acting on his own and really has no clue what to do unless the other 2 instruct him. That leaves Debbie, blonde and cute girl. She does resemble Rhoda from "the Bad Seed" most not only in appearance but also the way she performs the killings. She seems to have much more of a motive, does it in a much more clever way than the other 2 .
This film features MTV VJ Julie Brown, but not the one called Downtown Julie Brown, as far as I can determine. Yes, there were two VJs named Julie Brown. She puts on a dance performance that alone makes the movie worth watching. She could have been in Playboy like the other Julie Brown. The film also includes José Ferrer, who had three Oscar nominations and a win prior to this; and Joe Penny from Jake and the Fatman. The three child stars really do put on a good show as they commit their sometimes bloody murders. The little girl (Elizabeth Hoy) was the creepiest of them all.
BLOODY BIRTHDAY is a Ed Hunt project that revolves around three children who are born during a total eclipse. Not intentionally humorous, but the acting is so bad it is laughable. Curtis(Billy Jacoby), Steven(Andy Freeman)and the angelic cutie Debbie(Elizabeth Hay)by the age ten join forces and without hesitation gang up against anyone who gets in their way; and this includes their parents. Some situations are actually funny, then there are those that are plain stupid and those that are disturbingly brutal. These precocious hellions don't seem to have any real reason to kill; just for the thrill I guess. My two favorite scenes are when the birthday cake is poisoned, or thought to be poisoned. And the nudity of MTV-DJ Julie Brown playing the naughty sister. Also in the cast: Lori Lethin, Bert Kramer, Susan Strasberg, Ellen Geer, Joe Penny and Jose Ferrer. Cinematography doesn't resemble low-budget fare.
