Privileged teenage friends Jenny, Nell and Stream spend their senior year on a quest to rid Stream of her virginity. However, Stream wants more than just her first sexual experience. She wants to have an orgasm -- but achieving this proves problematic, as the boys she meets are hardly sensitive enough to provide her the release she seeks. When it becomes clear that Nell and Jenny have never experienced an orgasm either, all three set out to get one.

"Coming Soon" tackles the topic of teenage sex in a refreshing way-- frankly, cleverly and sensitively. I admire the writer's decision to show that the magic elixir for the story was being comfortable in one's own skin-- in other teen schlock movies, the arcs end when the protagonist finally falls in love, and it always completely contrived. (Not to say that this isn't fantastic in it's own right; I mean, who didn't love the ending to "Sixteen Candles"?) In this case, the love-focused plot lines are secondary to the self-discovery/self-actualization ideas, and therefore the story itself is all the more valuable. Plus, the whole film is charming and certainly worth seeing.
I watched this movie last night on TV.Although some of it was a little shoddy (like the ending, and the eventual fate of the two best friends) it was in general quite good. The point a lot of people miss is that this is EXACTLY how teenage girls from that particular demographic talk and act. They're not articulate, they're pretentious, they waffle on about things they couldn't possibly understand, they're very shallow and they're deeply insecure drama queens. It was actually like being back at school again for me.Ryan Reynolds also looks like my husband...so I found him pretty sexy (especially singing).I agree that some of the casting would have been more appropriate if the actors were closer to their characters' ages, and that better editing would have tightened it all up, but it was a nice popcorn movie.Think of Liv Tyler's character in "Empire Records", this is a movie about girls like that- neurotic, pressurised, rich kids. It's not going to resonate with everyone, but some of us will actually manage to identify with the whole thing, and then it's really, really funny.
I wanted to like this movie. It's not awful, but it's not very good either. There are some moderately funny moments that could have been enhanced by better directing and editing. In fact, that is the main problem with the film. It just seems to float along and never really get started. The dead on portrayal of private school kids and how petty they can be was lost through poor ploting. Also, characters seem to vanish and pop up randomly for no reason. To show you what I mean, I won't explain and leave you the way the movie left me feeling. The acting is OK at best but it's a teen comedy and it's not like I was expecting the best but the reactions to situations is a bit unbelievable. ***SPOILER*** This is most evident when Nell anounces she has had her first orgasm. The girls are happy for her and ask who the guy was. But no! It was a girl! Seems Nellie has a same sex attraction. How this revelation met just after Jenny has been berating the lesbian drummer as "That dike?" "Oh, it was her I did it with" "Thats great Nell!" (all smiles)and on to the next scene. But I digress. Ok for a rainy day but better directing could have really made a difference. 4/10
Coming Soon went a long way in illustrating how weird and awkward sex can be for budding women. Stopped significantly short of encouraging or even addressing masturbation as a way to explore sexuality, however, which is too bad. Also too bad is that it played in debutante elite circles in Manhattan - seems like movies with honest or controversial subjects have to play against perfect backgrounds to be seen.Altogether a cute movie but not quite the revolutionary breakthrough in propelling female sexuality into the mainstream eye that I had hoped to see.
