Like a lot of horror fans, I'm always interested in seeing bloody, over-the-top shenanigans and naked girls. The Last Horror Movie--which I saw a while ago and was super excited to find out it's going to be playing on Troma Comcast On-Demand this month (!!!)--definitely delivers the gore. However, it's also very intelligent film that stands on its own next to films like Peeping Tom and Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer. The writing is as sharp as it is self-reflexive, and the cinema verite cinematography adds depth and realism to the film. For fans and non-fans of the genre, The Last Horror Movie is a brilliant yet bloody exploration of the mind of a serial killer. Interested? Watch it on Troma Comcast On-Demand! I'll be right there with you.
"The Last Horror Movie" is an effective film that could be described as a British "Man Bites Dog". Unpredictable, witty and thought-provoking, Julian Richards' film rises above the limitations of its budget and the result is a haunting production that is difficult to forget. The film's star and narrator, Kevin Howarth, is superb as the psychopathic wedding video organiser, Max. Howarth's performance is right on the mark. Like Bret Easton Ellis' "American Psycho" Patrick Bateman, Max reveals the thought-processes that go through his disturbed mind. The film has the ability to put the viewer in an uncomfortable place and some scenes have a genuinely surprising outcome. This won't appeal to viewers expecting an "August Underground"-style gore-fest but it does have moments where the visual effects are excellent. An ingenious film, this is worthy of a viewing. Unlike most films, "The Last Horror Story" works best on VHS or DVD rather than the big screen. 8 out of 10.
I am always searching for something original when in the video store. Often something genuinely original is hard to find these days. In the recent decline of originality in the movie industry, "The Last Horror Movie" stands out like a beacon for its genre. It possesses the most brilliant ending since "Fight Club". It will have you locking your doors and windows! The premise of the film is to portray murder through the eyes of a character with no moral conscience, i.e. a psychopath. Unlike the many "psycho" movies made in the past, the killer is the narrator and maker of the film which is in a documentary/snuff movie format.I recommend this film for anyone who enjoys an unpredictable, intelligent and suitably violent horror film.
The is one of the most boring films I've EVER seen! Its got a good premise and would probably have been mildly entertaining in a shorter format (would have made an okay episode of Urban Gothic) but as it is its just one yawn-some killing after another. Max is one of the most unlikeable characters I've ever encountered (even for a serial killer obviously). The 'twist' is heavily signposted throughout and can be figured out by about fifteen minutes in. Max's speech implying that we the viewers are as bad as him because we have watched the killings didn't really seem relevant when we had been talking through most of them they were so dull.
