This 1986 horror sequel is sort of a revamp of the original, but the terror unfolds from the TV rather than the big screen. It features random people in an apartment building viewing a demon-themed horror flick on TV which unleashes a demon coming into the real world. Soon, demonic possession spreads to most of the tenants and the remaining struggle to survive. This isn't bad, except for the poor dubbing like the original and one of the demon creatures is annoying as hell. It does have good, gory make-up effects and a couple cheesy ones as well. I'd still give this a view at least once if you're into horror.
I watched both "Demons" and "Demons 2" (aka "Dèmoni 2... l'incubo ritorna") when I was a teenager, and remember then both fondly as being fairly scary movies. But having just seen "Demons" (the 1985 movie) the other night, I was sorely disappointed as the movie was not as great as I had remembered it. But still, I sat down to watch "Demons 2" again, just to check if it was as good as I remembered it.Wow, seriously? What was the purpose of this movie. It was most definitely not a continuation of the first movie. This was essentially just a remake of the movie that was made just one year before this second movie. It was the exact same story, just taking place in an apartment complex instead of an old theater. And even many of the actors and actresses were also from the first movie. Seriously? What were they thinking when they set out to make this movie and opted for the exact same story with many of the same acting talents? It just makes no sense to me.Sure, "Demons 2" was as enjoyable as "Demons", as an individual movie. Both of them should be seen as individual movies, albeit of the very same story and events. Don't watch them as being sequels, as I did, because that only leads to disappointment and confusion. If you have seen the first "Demons" movie, then there is very little reason to watch "Demons 2", and vice versa. The effects are on the same level in "Demons 2" as they were in "Demons", and they were practical effects that served their purpose well enough. Of course, take into consideration that this is a movie from 1986, so it is not really matching up to today's standards."Demons 2" wasn't all as good as I remembered it. Sure, it was adequate entertainment and good enough for a mid-Eightees horror movie. Just keep in mind that this is an Italian produced movie, and they had a certain atmosphere to them.
Version I saw: UK Arrow Bluray release Actors: 3/10 Plot/script: 4/10 Photography/visual style: 5/10 Music/score: 6/10 Overall: 5/10 I don't know what people see in Italian horror, to be honest. It has massive fans who pay well over the odds, but most of the examples I have seen were very poor.Demons 2 is bolstered by the involvement of Dario Argento, an undoubted big name in the art-house world. While most commonly a director, Argento contributes to this film as a producer and writer, not to mention bringing his daughter onto the project. Now much more famous, Asia Argento made her screen debut in this film. It's really director Lamberto Bava's film, though. I haven't seen the first Demons, but I gather that not much is carried over in terms of plot and characters anyway. If anything, trying to second-guess which parts came from the first film actually made it more entertaining, a diverting little game I could play. After an extended set-up, the main body of the film is essentially a zombie film. They shamble around, biting people and either eviscerating them or transforming them into more of their own. There is some quite good puppetry and prosthetic make-up in places, which I would say is by far the best aspect of the film... except that in other places, it is laughably shoddy. The acting is also very bad. This goes beyond normal bad acting, in which you can normally see what they are trying to do, but failing. In Demons 2, some of the acting is so bad that you actually can't tell what the character is supposed to be thinking. Some of their motivations, and reasons for doing what they do, are really obscured, and I have to admit that I got confused at times. As it goes on, the film just gets sillier and sillier, straying almost into so-bad-it's-good territory at times. The filming is a million miles from art-house territory, clearly using cheap cameras and film stock. The only other redeeming features is a soundtrack which features several highlights from the British indie rock scene of the time. I am not sure whether The Smiths and The Cult even know that their music has been taken and put into this film, and I never would have matched the styles in my own mind, but as it turns out, it works. Hats off to them for that. For my full review, see my independent film blog on Blogspot, Cinema Inferno: http://cinemainferno-blog.blogspot.co.uk/2015/01/demons-2-1986.html
Sort of funny how this movie has almost nothing to do with its predecessor "Dèmoni". The first movie had a sort of an open ending and left the door open for plenty of post-apocalyptic movie fun but for this movie they picked a different story, that in essence is being very similar to the first movie. It's therefore not entirely an original sequel but at least it manages to be just as much fun to watch as its predecessor. The first movie was set in a movie theater, this one in an apartment building. that's basically being the biggest difference between both movies but I'm not complaining. The first movie did so many things right and this sequel is basically redoing all of those moments again, in a bit of a different fashion, to keep things at least a bit fresh and still good and interesting to watch.Nothing in its story is explained really and things just happen in it. Guess that is also what I like so much about it. It doesn't waste any time on setting up stuff, or by try making things work as anything convincing or plausible. It's just a movie that you simply have to enjoy for what it is. No doubt also that most horror lovers shall indeed love, or at least enjoy, watching this movie. There is plenty of gore to enjoy in this movie and about just as gruesome to watch as its predecessor. The effects that it's using are simply fantastic, though it seems that they mostly simply recycled all of the effects of the first movie in this one.And just like the first movie; this movie for most part isn't featuring a main character in it. It isn't toward its end that the movie suddenly starts to focus on just two characters. It however in this case isn't really being a problem for the movie, since this is a movie that entertains on a whole different level and stuff like story, characters and dialog come completely secondary in it.Also when compared to other similar sort of genre movies, there is simply no denying it that this is one of the better ones within the genre, even though its mostly redoing stuff out of the first movie. The fun and gore compensate a lot really and make this a fun and simply good genre movie to watch!7/10http://bobafett1138.blogspot.com/
