The love story between the local Mormon boy and the pastor's daughter is not something upon which I can comment; however, virtually all the other facts surrounding this sad episode as set forth in the film are accurate. Here in Utah, there remains a grave sense of unease over just how much (if any) participation by authorities in Salt Lake City impacted the decisions made with respect to Mountain Meadows. There certainly is circumstantial evidence that implicates the highest levels of the church. Moreover, and what makes this event so hard to put to rest, since the highest levels of the Mormon Church have never admitted to any involvement in the massacre, they cannot really apologize for the outcome. The incident remains a never ending stain on the history of Utah, and it is not likely that the truth (in re: church officials in SLC and their involvement) will ever be known or admitted.

We need more movies like this! When is Hollywood going to be brave enough to expose radical Islam the way they have exposed the radical Mormons of the late 1850's?????????????????????????? The acting is amazing. The cinematography is sweeping. The pacing, editing, sound and productions values are all first rate. The vistas are amazing. The slaughter of innocent woman and children is disgusting. The act of the Mormon leadership at this time unforgivable. The horror unreal. The blood thirst scary. The movie is almost a horror movie. But it's not. It's a true story. And that is REALLY FRIGHTENING. Oh the horror.

This film doesn't purport to be historically accurate, as far as I know, so I am not going to comment on the way the producers used the history except to say that it reminds me of The DaVinci Code applied to Mormons. Film makers have been using Catholics for years to make their points about religion. Now it's the Mormons' turn, I guess. Aside from that, I would like to point out that the dialogue is sophomoric and often laughable, the plot is predictable and sentimentalist, and the acting is pretty atrocious for the most part. The camera work is quite nice in places. I would have liked to see more landscapes. It would have relieved the boredom. Funny thing. This film reminded me of the LDS Church's docu-dramas. That was amusingly ironic. This movie is pretty much a fail in my view. It would be a fail no matter what the historical subject was.

I find it quite odd that so many folks have slammed this fine film. A masterpiece, no. A hateful 'attack' on Mormons, hardly. I know for a fact the LDS doctrine outlined in the film is what 'the church' holds. Why is this historical film off limits, I don't get it. The actors all did a credible job and Terrance Stamp was wonderful. This is a true Hollywood story. It is based on a real event. The Mormons murdered those folks on the meadow. It is no indictment on every living member of the LDS than a film about the crusades impugns every Catholic. The ending was a little over the top but it was a fine love story. All in all I have seen few films bashed this terribly that were so very good.
