Never heard of this movie? Well, it does have a fair number of reviews. This is one of the worst movies I've seen all month and it's so sad I have to end Book Month like this. This movie features Dracula trying to get his bride. That's really all I could follow. I fell half asleep watching this thing. It was just that dull. It's simply an ugly looking film. The slow motion is used so terribly. The movie ends with Dracula being impaled by a cross and that's it. What an anti-climax. The costumes look like something out of a Halloween party and the teeth are so fake looking. I obviously didn't see this in 3D and wouldn't have wanted to give anything more to see this.Throughout the film, there's random scripture being recited and mostly pointless religious imagery. It's just a movie that accomplishes nothing and it does seem to go right by as so little happens. Strange how it says the movie's 110 minutes long when every version I could find was only 93, but that's probably for the better. Well, that's it for Book Month. Now I'm doing Cult Month! Not cult as in worship, cult as in films that have reached cult status.
This sweeping take on the vampire story has some stunning scenery, some impressive direction, lukewarm acting and a plethora of astonishingly bad CGI effects. To be honest, that is the review in a nutshell, but to expand Actors range from German, Italian, Spanish, and the Netherlands giving the production an expansive, truly European flavour. Rutger Hauer is probably the best known name here, playing Van Helsing in a typically under-written part – there is no question of engaging with any of the perfunctorily written characters. Vampire Tanja (Miriam Giovanelli) is perhaps the most striking character; her sensuality and smouldering looks bringing a real presence to the character. The problem here is that for the most part, the long film is extremely dull, Dracula has a cunning way of disguising the bite marks on his victims by biting them on the back of the knee, at least in the case of the ravishing Lucy (Aria Argento – the director's daughter). There is an impressive effect sequence where Dracula (played with quiet menace by Thomas Kretschmann – sometimes too quiet, as his whispering is sometimes inaudible) forms into physical being from swarming flies, followed by a slow motion close-up of a man blowing his brains out, under the Count's spell. The castle, the village and locations are all extremely well shot, but as soon as a CGI effect is added, the whole spell is squashed, which has the curious effect of rendering the production a very expensive look that also appears to be incredibly cheap, all in the space of one scene. Quite an achievement.A positive is the haunting musical score by Claudio Simonetti, a moody, heavily synthesised soundtrack augmenting a string section that provides a truly wistful feel to the various set-pieces.About 45 minutes from the end, the campiness of Dario Argento's directorial colours and camera swirls begins to become enjoyable (a campiness exemplified by a European power ballad used as the closing theme). Once the fact that the film is a colourful, cheesy extravaganza has been established, it draws you in. By the time Dracula has transformed into a billowing mass of ashes that suddenly looks like a wolf, the production has taken a hold – just in time for the end credits to roll.
If want to see a really scary movie then see this movie. It has a great story line. It also has great acting. It also has great special effects. It is not a 3.6. It has a lot of suspense. It very underrated. This is a great remake. It is so scary. It is one of the scariest movies of all time. Dracula (1992) is a little bit better. So is Dracula (1931) is also a little bit better. Nosferatu (1922) is also better. Thomas Kretschmann is a great actor. Bram Stoker was a great writer. See this movie. It a great movie. Rugter Hauer is a great actor. This is one great movie. It is a 9 not a 3.6. See this great film if you get a chance. It really is one of the scariest movies of all time.
If you like 70's type horror movies then watch this one. The acting was terrible, almost without any feelings at all. The dialog was lacking anything resembling natural conversations and left me not really believing any of it. Hard to believe anyone could read the script and decide to back it. But... I liked the movie and smiled frequently because of these poor qualities. In 3D, most of the scenes were pretty good. There were not very many eye popper scenes and panning in the woods was occasionally disorienting. The rest of the movie was really pretty good in 3D and I'd watch it again in 3d, not 2D. Almost unbelievable that it was made last year. It really reminded me of a 70's horror. All it needed was Peter Cushing as Van Helsing. There are many really trashy horror movies being made today and this is not one of them.
