Twelfth Godzilla film sees yet another group of aliens once again plotting to take over the Earth, and only a comic book writer and his friends can stop them... Meanwhile, another Anguirus shows up to help Godzilla fight the aliens, who have summoned King Ghidorah and a new monster called Gigan to fight them, and destroy the humans. Only the use of a Godzilla themed amusement park(!) gives this otherwise ridiculous and tiresome film any distinction, which also uses flashback footage of battle scenes to compensate for the obvious low budget look of this film. Series really started to fall into a state of decay here, which was a shame, though kids may not mind.
Godzilla and a giant alien chicken. Great stuff. It's back to the very basic for Godzilla after many were disappointed by the previous effort (I loved it). It kind of throws away everything Godzilla started as. Now we have a fairly kid friendly film, in which aliens design an amusement park in the hopes of controlling some of the monsters from monster island. Because giant monsters are the greatest way to attract families away from their mundane lives. A manga artist uncovers this bizarre plot and soon the aliens release their own monster, Gigan. Fun fights and frolics abound, even if these movies are getting rather crowded.
This is one of my favorite Godzilla movies. I grew up loving this flick even if it does have some cheap flaws. A confrontation like this has never been done before on film and Toho made icons out of Gigan and Anguirus with this one movie. So, let's jump right into the plot of this awesome monster flick.A comic book artist is hired by mysterious men in orange and black suits to help design a monster themed amusement park. Soon enough he and a few of his companions delve into this mystery and find out a terrible truth: these suited men are alien cockroaches from a polluted planet that desire a "perfect peace" for their own species by taking over the world using the combined might of the cyborg Gigan and King Ghidorah the three-headed monster. Godzilla, having suspected trouble since the beginning, allies himself with former enemy Anguirus to combat this double threat in the ultimate battle to save the earth. The movie is nothing short of excellent. I like the way the humans go around trying to find out what is really going on and the aliens are quite sophisticated and more subtle compared to most other alien invaders in the series. The idea of aliens hiding in an amusement park might sound silly, but when you think about it, it's ingenious; no one would think to look for aliens in a place like that. The logic is undeniable. As for the big battle between the monsters, it's freakin' awesome, especially the last ten minutes of it that's truly action-packed. You also see the close friendship Godzilla and Anguirus share that is demonstrated in this movie in spite of their rough past. The monsters are treated as actual characters rather than just giant beasts just out to destroy each other. There are a couple of flaws in this movie. Stock footage tends to be used frequently in this film, which was common in Godzilla movies at the time. There are a few odd moments here and there like Godzilla and Anguirus actually talking to each other. Supposedly, their were originally speech bubbles back in Japan, but a change was made here.Despite these little flaws, Godzilla vs Gigan is still a fun, action-packed monster flick. It's recommended that you give this one a watch and enjoy.
"Godzilla vs. Gigan" isn't up to par with the rest of the films in the Godzilla series. The acting is average at best, there isn't much action until the end of the film and the dubbing is terrible. The monsters themselves are pretty cool and I did enjoy the scene where Godzilla and Anguirus speak to each other in distorted English! As far as the aliens invading earth, Toho Studios decided on intelligent cockroaches. Umm...OK. Not the most effective part of the plot(if one can call it that). This is typical Godzilla-style mayhem and fans of the big G will want to check this out once. If you're not a fan, skip it. There are much better Godzilla films out there.
