Straight away: The best one could do with a sci-fi alien based plot in a budget like that!Visually, it is a masterpiece, well shot and the CGI (whatever little there is and make up is so very very good! It is more of a single act play in many ways. I haven't much to say except we all have seen much much much worse movies made on very inflated budgets. This is the kind of work all movie makers need to be doing. Watch it in HD or superHD, its worth it.The plot is quite simple yet very well executed and the cinematography does so much justice to the whole premise, that you can hardly take your eyes away. Sci-Fi channels, this is definitely the kind of work you should be doing! What is budget in the face of talent? If any one is interested, this movie is currently on NETFLIX in superHD.
For those not aware, this is basically a 'student' film, made by amateurs who somehow got a budget and the time together. But it's a rather good one. It's a spin off from the 'Enemy Mine' universe, and that's not blowing anything, you find that out pretty quickly near the start. It's well shot (the landscapes are austerely gorgeous), and there were a couple of moments, just a few seconds here and there, where there was some beautiful capturing of reactions among the protagonists.Rookie mistakes:* Dialogue that drags on and on with too much back and forth. They needed to sit down and edit the hell out of all the conversations. I'm impressed they managed to get the film up to feature length! But it's mostly talk-padding, unfortunately.* Shot sameness. Basically in a film no two shots should ever look the same, unless you are doing so deliberately to make a point. But this is largely a function of how much time and effort you can afford to put into the thing. It's also why roving cameras and continuous takes have become more popular (and all this 'found footage' rubbish). Simplest way is to shoot all scenes with at least 2 cameras, then shoot them again with the cameras moved, and make sure they are all at different zoom distances - gives you 4 streams you can edit to jump between that all look different. And that's about all the criticism I can level. The story could have been told in 40 minutes, and probably should have been, and if I want to give them another digging at I could say what the hell was with the capes and crests on the helmets? But, style is a choice, they wanna make it look that way, that's their prerogative.OK - now I wanna see the same team go forth and make a REAL film! They have proved they have what it takes!
I have never written a review here but thought this film really deserved all the attention it can get. It's one hell of a solid film; if you are a true sci-fi lover, you WILL love this! Definitely a good watch. It gave me a little feel of Earth II the series, although the story is nothing similar. The only reason this film probably never made it big is purely because they never used a "big name" star cast. Personally feel the actors did a perfect job. They need to find a way to promote this movie! Way more heart than the current movies popping out there. The plot I would say is more or less a "real" story, in the sense that, you would not go like "ah, that can only happen in a movie". To sum it down, the movie is not purely a sci-fi plot, so if you are not a pure sc-fi lover you would still be able to appreciate the movie to its fullest. The character reactions, spirit and cunningness are things you can relate to in real life. Perfect storytelling with limited resources!
if compares this low budget film to dennis quaid's 1985 great sci-fi film, 'enemy mine', then this film should be barely reach a 4-star rating. Several thoughts came up to my mlnd when i watched this film were: 1) omg, shooting movie in the hot desert with armors and helmets? are they serious? how could those actors survived in the deadly heat? 2)the aliens were just look-likes in enemy mine, but the make-ups were much too easy than what they did in the enemy mine 3) ah, now the cargo that the aliens lost and tried so hard to catch back was a human sample. wow, that was at least not a bad idea. but for a sci-fi movie, everything was just so primitive. guess they were designed before and older beyond 1985?
