let's start by saying this....let's hope the writer, director and producer quit the industry and went back to making subs at Subway. 'cause this movie was extremely hard to watch to the end from the poor lines to the cheesy effects to the complete destruction of the world that this movie is supposed to be based on, I'm surprised they found financial backers. but, I suppose to saying goes..there's a sucker born every minute. when news of this movie came out, I was very excited. the world and universe that was created for the books, role playing and miniature games are very rich and exciting. a lot of the technology made sense, there wasn't all the "lasers, blasters and ray guns" of other sci-fi franchises. it's a dirty, gritty reality where a lot of the times the hero doesn't survive nor make a big difference in the ultimate outcome. so, with knowing what the source material was about, I was quite excited. then this abortion came along. poor CGI effects, EXTREMELY poor weapons and effects, poor spoken lines...the dialogue made me want to weep. then there's the MASSIVE changes that came with it. changes to the weapons, technology, the heroes and villains. everything was changed so dramatically, I'm amazed they could still retain the rights to call this the Mutant chronicles. overall, this movie was given the 1 it earned. what is REALLY sad is it had an excellent cast. Tomas Jane made a great Mitch Hunter, even though the character was almost unrecognizable. the other actors and actresses did a great job trying to save this sinking ship, but eve with their frantic bailing, it still sank and became the utter shipwreck it is.

I gave this movie 1 out of 10 stars because IMDb does not allow me to give less than that. If it would have, I would have probably given a zero or even negative. Producers and directors who make such movies should be banned from film making. These 111 minutes which I spent on this movie are never coming back and that would be one of the greatest regrets of my life. Where do I start and where do I end to describe this movie. A machine came from space 10,000 years ago that converts humans into mutants. People bury it and during a war it resurfaces and starts converting humans into mutants and a group of people go to destroy the machine. Mindless story which is fit for people with no brains. Everything from story to direction to acting to action to screenplay to cinematography makes me want to pull out my hair. If you ever want to waste your 111 minutes, just keep staring at the wall, but please do not watch this useless thing called movie.

Sometimes, seemingly simple movies, panned by most of the critics, just grab me. This was one of them. It takes place in the future, but I was gripped from the get-go with World War II trench-like warfare going on at the start. It feels very much like a good war movie at this point with a compassionate officer going up against some kind of Nazis, but things are not really that especially with the steampunk machines and unconventional firearms. It goes even crazier when some long-dormant evil is awakened. After that strong opening, we delve summarily into that society and some kind of prophecy that involves a desperate quest to save the world by a small group of heroes. It sounds pretty cliché, right, but weirdly it works here and the characters are compelling despite not being characterized much. It's the type of suicide mission story where the "heroes" get killed of one by one, and not always in the most heroic manner. However, you kinda grow attached to the multi-ethnic group, want to learn more about them (some intriguing snippets but not much) and their sometimes noble self-sacrificial acts make them likable. I truly enjoyed the heroism on display, but can't say I was particularly emotionally moved by any of the deaths. I also liked very much how the plot sometimes played with our expectations (witness the mother and child trying to evacuate) despite some logical flaws that bugged me a little. The mutants in question are not super-heroes (like X-Men) or standard "zombies", and the title is misleading because it's not really "their" chronicles. Thee mutants are antagonists and besides attacking and being killed, they don't do much. The movie is apparently low-budget (at 25 millions, I'd say medium-budget) but it really doesn't show. You have stunning special effects, decors and vehicles that don't really look computer-generated (and sometimes actually weren't). It's not to say everything is realistic, it's a bit stylized and otherwordly like 300 for example. There were some really spectacular scenes and vistas. The action scenes were exciting and overall I thought the directing was very good. The movie was paced well, and I was never bored. One thing I didn't really care much for was the religious claptrap, but I've seen worse. Please note however that I didn't watch the shorter (by around 10 minutes) director's cut that cuts some of the religious stuff but also a few nice character moments. I did check the differences and suggest watching the theatrical non director's cut version if you can. Before I forget, you do have some bad-ass heroes kicking major butt in satisfying ways (less and less guns and more sword fighting as it goes), and some enjoyable b-movie one-liners by Thomas Jane's character. So it's certainly not the type of movie you haven't seen before, but it's masterfully executed, beautiful in a post-apocalyptic way, but most of all it feels right. A rental is definitely recommended and myself, I'm even thinking of buying it.Rating: 8 out of 10 (Very good).

If you take this movie for what it is, its a great movie. This movie crosses into many genres, has and has some decent enough acting mixed in well with its due amount of cheesiness. It also maintains itself by keeping a small sense of humor mixed with darkness through the whole movie that really helps give this movie style. The plot is easy, no clever twists and turns just a good time:) I would recommend this for rental or late night cable, but I probably wouldn't buy it. I can't believe the budget of $25,000,000 and I wonder just where the hell all that money went because the same movie could've probably been made for 2 million.I mean where was the hype because I didn't even know this was released till recently and for $25,000,000, love it or hate it we should all have at least seen it in a million commercials in interviews by now. Yeah someone got ripped off. Anyway, still an enjoyable movie even if it did cost a gazillion dollars to make, but looks independent.
