Damsels In DistressSurprisingly it is flat out hilarious and offers the audience their life of the time throughout the course of time and keeps them engaged throughout the course of it by only walking on something that it is so narrow yet is explored in detail with such an elegance and confidence that it is almost impossible not to be effected by it. The screenplay is gripping, thought-provoking and of ironic nature, all along its well edited and of almost 100 minutes. The camera work is utterly beautiful and is shot nicely too but unfortunately is short on other technical aspects especially on sound department. Whit Stillman; the writer-director, has done a tremendous work on executing the anticipated vision on screen by keeping it light and breezy. Greta Gerwig is amazing on her portrayal and is supported well by her cast and the key to that is the chemistry among them which is more convincing than any other thing. Having said that, the feature chews off too much of the subplots of the characters only to make a definite point which the audience can see far before it even hits, which makes it redundant. Damsels In Distress is anything but in distress, as it flaunts itself on a much larger scale; something to think about.

Fantastic little gem, and come back film from writer/director Whit Stillman. It's not as ambitious in scope as his previous films, but the writing is as sharp as ever, and all the actresses are phenomenal. For the uninitiated, this a dialogue driven film. The humor is all deadpan and dry, not to mention quirky as hell. As always Stillman tackles very human issues within the confines of a very specific environment, with very specific characters, most people will never encounter. That's part of what makes his movies so special, that they can be so offbeat yet be anyone can relate to them, if they are open to it.This is the kind of film that many people will either dismiss as boring, those in this camp I have no use for, or pretentious, those in this camp, I understand, but that's the appeal. Give it a shot and let the dialogue wash over your, just don't expect a typical plot.

Damsels in Distress is awful for so many reasons but principally for a comedy script that isn't funny and multiple lousy performances.Greta Gerwig of course attracts something of a loyal following but she again turns in her usual irritating performance. While it could be pleaded the character of Violet is intended to be infuriating, and so the performance is intentionally irritating, as Gerwig gives exactly the same performance in every film she makes, we can only conclude the performer is to blame. Others around her (e.g. Analeigh Tipton as Lily, or Ryan Metcalf as Frank) do a reasonable job with the poor material, although Megalyn Echikunwoke as Rose cannot be forgiven for giving one of the worst performances ever on film. And just when you thought things could not get any worse, the film closes with two really bad dance sequences that kill stone dead any message about the wonders of dance which the film has tried to spin.Awful, simply awful.

This is one of those movies one gets sucked into because the trailer seems like it might be fun, quirky, and clever. Instead, this one was boring, weird, and dumb. My wife and I tried, we really did. I am a university professor and love my students in all their fun, quirky, and clever ways. This movie did not include a realistic portrayal of any student I have ever met. This movie did not include an actually funny joke. This movie seemed to want to play out a strange gender comparison game in which the goal was to see who were more ridiculous and hollow, the harmless chumps otherwise known as boys, or the self-satisfied and hopelessly superficial girls. There was not a likable character in the lot and I would take my most challenging student over any of the pathetic characters in this movie. I feel badly for the actors and even worse for their professors.
