There are some positives about this movie, but they mostly stop at the eye-candy on display, and the general killing by a mermaid, if you are into that sort of thing. But even these things are tame and toned down rather than being an over-exaggerated cheesefest like Sharknight or Piranha 3DD.I think this toned down approach might have been why the alternative title is Nymph, which sounds about as wimpy and lacking in substance as the movie actually was. There could be some good sides to this movie but it seems like most of the character stuff they set up never really pays off and there is way too much unnecessary messing about before the actual mermaid appears. Sometimes this can work since you actually care about the characters and feel peril when they are in danger, but here it is wasted and some characters are even killed off-screen. Terrible.Overall this movie could have been good if they had doubled down on characterisation, effects, cheesiness or picked any certain direction in general really. Instead it kind of flirts with being serious, flirts with being campy, and in the end just turns out to be one big disappointment.
When a movie is called "Killer Mermaid," I think maybe the deadliness of the mermaid should be one of the core values of the movie. Sure, enchanting men to murder for you is quite lethal, but this isn't "Dangerous Mermaid" or the far more appropriate "Lazy Mermaid Who Won't Go Hunt For Herself." Even the cover is misleading -- that of a mermaid approaching a swimmer in shallow tropical sunny water, whereas no one actually went in the water until the last ten minutes and by that point it was night and swimming was, by necessity of not wanting to get eaten, brief. Up until that point, they basically just ran away from an old dude who fed his lady mermaid chopped up people parts. Two and a half stars.
I didn't know much about this before picking it up cheap, and I did shy away a little due to the alternate title "Killer Mermaid", but this turned out to be not too bad.Movie starts with a guy and his girlfriend riding around on a motorbike, who then stop by the waters edge for some kinky fun. Before things go to far the guy seemingly in a trance just walks to the edge of the pier and ends up in the water, and apparently drowns. His girlfriend panics and screams for help when a stranger walks up and using what looks like a home-made grappling hook shuts her up real quick and drags her off.Scene then switches to 2 friends on vacation who hook up with a local guy and his girlfriend for some relaxed fun of boating and swimming, even though one of them is terrified of the water. While out boating one day, one of them notices a small island, Mamula island, and is interested in going there to explore. Apparently the island is no longer equipped to take larger boats and is not an official tourist attraction. They decide to go another day when they have a small inflatable with them to make is easier to get ashore. They are overheard making plans to go there and an older man warns them not to venture there, but of course if that happens, there's no movie.Accompanying them is another random male friend and they set about exploring the island. Not too long after they arrive they notice another older man that they have seen previously on the mainland, pouring what looks like buckets of blood and body parts down into a well. They decide to leave the island but it's too late, their inflatable boat was shot and sunk and now they are being hunted. The race is on for them to find another way off the island. While trying to escape a couple of them discover that there is a girl, (the mermaid) trapped in a cell. The mermaid, or siren only affects men and at various times, the 2 guys go into a trance like state and are determined to get to the source of the siren song, which the women in the group cannot hear. This was their method of luring men to their deaths. The mermaid presents herself as a rather good looking young woman albeit with a fish tail, however when she's about to kill she transforms into a hideous monster with razor sharp teeth.Turns out that a Nazi contingent who were on the island discovered the mermaid and after killing most of them, she fell in love with one of the 2 remaining soldiers. Since that time he has been killing people for her and feeding them to her. 2 members of the the group manage to get away by making use of an underground tunnel which surfaces into an abandoned submarine base. The surviving 2 manage to get rescued by the man who first warned them not to go there who also happens to be the other former Nazi survivor and he helps get them to the mainland. The Mermaid however has tracked them down and attacks them before she ends up being killed. The film ends on a cliff-hanger as the end scene has many of the mermaids "sisters" on their way to get revenge. The movie is not too bad for a modern day horror but it's not without its flaws and moments of silliness that seems to plague horror movies. The 2nd world war ended 70 years ago and at best these 2 remaining Nazis would be in their late eighties if not their nineties and in no real condition to be killing anyone, but this isn't the case. The killer on the island is using a rifle with manual loaded cartridges which take some time to effectively remove the spent cartridges, re-load, aim and shoot and none of the group use that time to attack him. Even though the inflatable boat is sunk, both guys are strong swimmers and could easily swim to the launch moored offshore, but instead they run back into the fortress and inevitably get lost.Despite the "R" rating, there isn't as much blood and gore in this as you'd expect. It has its moments but there is nothing out of the ordinary with the violence. And despite the title there is very little killing actually done by the mermaid herself. The film is a little slow to start but I guess that is to try and develop the characters somewhat, but in any case you still don't care for any of them. Possibly the best things in this are the locations themselves. The fortress is real and Mamula island is real and was used as a concentration camp during the war where experiments were performed, so it does add to the eeriness. Overall it's not a bad movie and while the story is certainly not new, the effects are not too bad for what appears to be a mid-budget movie. It's worth a look at least once.
Two young American women go on a Mediterranean vacation and uncover the watery lair of a killer mermaid hidden beneath an abandoned military fortress. What was once a carefree adventure becomes a deadly fight for survival. So, the film has gone through a few title changes: from "Mimula" to "Killer Mermaid" to "Nymph". The first one is the most accurate, other than that no one knows what that is. The second sounds like a SyFy film. The third is sort of close. Really ,they ended up with a mermaid mixed with a siren. What would that be called? There is some great use of color, although the camera has an odd tendency to "float" rather than focus on the subjects. There is also some awkward English, but given that this is in Serbia, that really should be expected.Anyway, not terrible, but it does not even come close to the original mermaid horror film: "Night Tide".
