Tired of the trending, by the number supernatural/zombie/hack-and-slash horror films? This is the refreshing little film you need. I watched the film having no idea what I was stepping into, and I think that's the way it should be watched. It covers a host of disparate film genres and blends them beautifully together ( I don't even want to mention which ones as that itself partly spoils the film in my mind). The film has gorgeous visuals, great direction, and some amazing shots of breathtaking locations in Italy. The films score is composed by electronic musician Jimmy Lavalle, and compliments the film perfectly with its lush and ethereal sounding synths - definitely worth listening to on its own too. With it's amalgamation of genres it's easy to see why the film didn't prove more popular, but give it a watch, and you'll be glad you're in the minority of those who did the same.
Some okay cgi and pretty scenery. The acting and story was better than Resolution. Although that isn't saying much. Everything else was just drugs and unbelievable moments. I can't believe all the positive reviews. It's like a twenty something man- boy drug addict had a anime-related tentacle poem dream and thought, "I'm going to make a movie about that!" There is some attempt at making it "smart" with all the science garbage but it just doesn't come together.
Spring is an exquisite tale. A story of the innocent abroad meeting the wrong the only woman in true Henry James fashion, it uncoils along the Puglian coast in long, broad, carnal lapses that are as much satisfaction than longing for that inaccessible moment, the surrendering of self, the end of the world.Yes it has flaws, mostly useless CGI, but one guesses it is a 21st century thing, a bit like too much gilding in rococo or too many conversations sacrées during the Renaissance. Spring is as much about growing pains that it is about blossoming. But the acting is right and the camera work is fluid. What the story owes to Lovecraft is more than mitigated by things as simple as a bottle of wine, an olive tree, love lost and found. The best movie monsters are those one could actually love. Spring has such one, but holds much more. It has a prey that is human, full bodied and sweet as a Negroamaro. One can not foretell that at the beginning, when the film seems aiming at an Italian rendition of Hostel, but this rare feast is accomplished with near nothing, a bit of alien dialogue, a tree dying to allow the growth of a new one, and the moon over the ocean. It has, of course, the unspeakable, almost unfilmable splendor of Italy.A volcano is erupting at the end, but this is not what is really happening. A couple of sound effects does the trick. This is where the Rite of Spring has led us, gaping, the ocean rolling its indifferent waves, and we feel happy, and amazed, and wiped out. This is a lovely movie.
I watched this movie because I was in the mood to watch a horror film and I like watching random indy horror flicks sometimes.Unfortunately (for me), this really isn't a horror film at all, in the way that it is not the least bit "scary." If you like chick-flicks and romantic comedies, you will probably like this. It's basically a simple love story between two young people but with an interesting twist. Our main protagonist travels to Italy after his mom dies and falls in love with a girl who turns out to be some kind of vampire/werewolf creature. The movie stays somewhat intriguing for a while, but in my opinion, the big reveal where he first finds out she is a "monster" (the audience knows long before) is very cheesy and comical. They cut to too many close-up shots that show imperfections in the make-up and the went a little overboard, choosing to turn her into a strange octopus like creature this time around. I found myself laughing at a lot of moments that were supposed to be intense or serious. If you are looking for an independent romantic comedy with a creative twist, you will probably like this. They have good chemistry and the acting is pretty decent most of the time. The film is beautifully shot, with a pleasant looking, artistic feel and nice simple color grading that feels natural and not over-done.Personally, once it gets to the part of the story where she starts explaining her transformations, I just couldn't buy it and felt like the film sort of fell apart at that point. She clearly acts like a young person, and not someone who is thousands of years old and lives forever. They would have been better off leaving things un-said, than trying so hard to explain everything and open up a myriad of holes in the story, and leave you with more questions that answers. While this film wasn't really for me, its a quality film and I can see why many people have enjoyed it. It will be interesting to see what this director does next.
