I just watched Casanova for the first time for probably over 7 years when I last saw it when I was around 14 years old. I loved it then and I even love it much more now!I have always been a BIG Heath Ledger fan but this is just so much more then a brilliant cast, it has a great script, setting, music and humor and I loved every second of it!!And I must give a big shout-out to Jeremy Irons who play the notorious bishop Pucci which he gives a very serious but funny take on, love it!! The only downside is the less good greenscreen effekts that occur in a few shots in the third act. But other then that the films takes place in it entirely in Venedig.A much watch!!
This is a lovely little feel-good film featuring a bunch of memorable performances from Heath Ledger, Sienna Miller (and a particularly brilliant one from Jeremy Irons), among others. The films offers a rather playful take on the life of the notorious womanizer Giacomo Casanova and tells us about his one true love, a strong-headed Venetian lady with feministic views, and the pains that the 18th century libertine takes to possess her, as a ruthless inquisitor, appointed by the pope, tries to execute him on the charges of heresy. A guilty pleasure of sorts with little historical significance, Casanova is nonetheless a must watch for the late Heath Ledger fans! For more on the world of cinema, please visit my film blog "A Potpourri of Vestiges".
The story of Casanova is the tale of one of the greatest lovers of all time. It should be a story of sensuality, passion, intrigue... but, alas, when it becomes Disney, all we get is just another sappy romantic comedy, but a funny one, at least. The story is the typical fiasco of "the lover who finds his true love", but well told, funny-paced and with good acting. Of course, during the course of the movie, the clichés mount almost embarrassingly, one over the top of the next one: "The feminist ahead of her time", "the fat comic relief", "the young apprentice", etc. But, at the same time, it's so recognizable and light-hearted, that all the flaws are forgiven, and then we just can sit and enjoy this silly and lovely story, in midst of impressive scenarios. The acting is good. Ledger is good in this one, showing skill to perform the enigmatic Casanova, and the rest of the actors are decent enough to makes us enjoy this Venetian holiday. In conclusion?, not a boring movie, but nothing special. It's just an enjoyable and lovely experience.7/10
Francesca Bruni: "Give me a man who is man enough to give himself just to the woman who is worth him. If that woman were me I would love him alone and forever." History's most renowned ladies' man finally meets his match in this historical romance laced with comedy and adventure. In Venice in 1753, Giacomo Casanova (Heath Ledger) is a notorious playboy whose way with women goes too far when he's caught leaving the bedroom of a novice nun, and one of the leading prosecutors of the Inquisition, Pucci (Jeremy Irons), puts him on trial. The Doge (Tim McInnerny), Venice's political point man, is a friend of Casanova's and pulls strings to get him off the hook and allow him to stay in the city, but under one condition -- he must take a wife and remain faithful to her. Casanova sets his sights on Victoria (Natalie Dormer), a lovely young maiden who is obviously taken with the handsome ladykiller, but he's not the only one who wants her hand. Giovanni Bruni (Charlie Cox) is a young man who is very much in love with Victoria, and in order to move him out of the picture, Casanova challenges him to a duel. However, when Casanova is bested in swords in the challenge, he discovers he's actually been parrying with Giovanni's sister, Francesca (Sienna Miller). As Casanova gets to know Francesca, he discovers she's a gifted writer and a bright and independent woman as well as a good hand with a sword, and he comes to the realization that she's the woman he wants to take to the altar. However, Francesca has already been promised to the vain and chubby Papprizzio (Oliver Platt), a man she's never met, and she doesn't seem at all interested in the notorious Casanova.First off, if you're looking for an accurate piece of the legendary womanizer, you have to turn back...now. This film is as inaccurate as it can be and proud of it. A farce is what they call it and its all good, clean fun. The late, great Heath Ledger stars as titular character Giacomo Casanova, Jeremy Irons as the General Inquisitor, Oliver Platt as chubby Paprizzio and Sienna Miller as ladylove Francesca Bruni.A great choice of cast seeing as how they nailed each respective roles. Seems to me, they had fun while making the movie and just enjoyed each and every moment. A pretty good historical farce which is more like a parody to the legend.
