In this Marvel Comic adaption, four astronauts get bombarded with cosmic rays when an accident occurs. The four of them acquire special powers, and decide to form a superhero group called the Fantastic Four. They then fight their arch-enemy Dr. Doom. Just watched this film on youtube for the very first time and my god it was awful and at this point the first 2 films with Jessica Alba is the best versions of the Fantastic 4 i mean common how hard can it be to make a Fantastic Four film? Just give the rights back to Marvel, the 2015 version even though it was still an above average film for me at least it had a good film somewhere inside this whole mess but this one? It has bad acting, over the top action, cartoony villains that look like they came out of a Power Rangers episode and in my opinion the worst take ever on Dr. Doom he is stupid and over the top and instead of using his actual powers he uses a damn gun at one point for some reason and there's even a scene where the Fantastic 4 break out and he comes in and keeps talking and then he turns his head and looks at the big hole in the wall and goes like "Hmm" seriously? He tries to be like Darth Vader meets Dr. Doom but he failed on both sides. Also the fact that Sue and Reed met for the first time when she was like 13 and he was like 30 something was creepy as hell, The Thing looks awful and for some reason there's even a Batman reference. Overall this is a film that came out in 1994 and looks like it came out on 1977 and for that i'm going to give it an F
The Fantastic Four (1994) * 1/2 (out of 4) Early Marvel adaptation about a group of astronauts who are struck with cosmic rays, which turns them into the title characters. Pretty soon the superheroes have to battle Dr. Doom.THE FANTASTIC FOUR has become quite the legendary picture because Roger Corman basically agreed to make it but then the film was never released. There are countless documents out there about why the movie was never released but it would be best for you to watch the recent documentary DOOMED: THE UNTOLD STORY OF ROGER CORMAN'S THE FINAL FOUR. That documentary features interviews with the cast and crew and really gives one a great understanding of what happened with this film.Obvously, having now seen this version, the biggest problem is that they were trying to make a high-budget movie with a very small budget. Whenever you do that it's going to be obvious when things are hampered because of the lack of money. This here really comes across as a bunch of people getting together without the means of making a high-budget movie and they just do whatever it takes to get the job done. The problem is that the entire cheap look just makes the film seem more silly than anything else. It's almost like a made up movie so to speak. Having seen the documentary and knowing what happened, I really feel bad for the cast and crew.I'm really not sure who would enjoy this movie on its own terms. The history behind the film has made it a cult item and on that level it is slightly entertaining to watch. If you're familiar with what happened behind-the-scenes then it's interesting to watch everything play out in front of your eyes. The only problem is that it's just not entertaining or silly enough to work as camp.
I'm 14 years old, (which means I actually grew up on Michael Bay and Brett Ratner) and I cannot recommend this movie enough. It's honestly one of my favorite superhero movies of all time. I absolutely despise the 2005 version, mainly because all the characters were complete jerks and there was nothing to relate to. Yes, this version was low budget, but WHO CARES? Clerks was low budget, and look how good that is! There have been many complaints about the fact that the end sequence where the Human Torch chases after the laser was animated. Again, who cares? The movie is SUPPOSED to be a cartoon. The acting was pretty decent, not Oscar winning material, but I could still believe everything was happening. Oley Sassone is a very underrated director, and I think he should be right up there with Spielberg and Lucas! The musical score is absolutely amazing, and I found myself humming the theme song for days. I love all Roger Corman movies, and this one is no exception! If you're a movie buff like me, and you want to show the little ones a Fantastic Four movie, show them this one, it's not as junky and MTV-ised.
This film reminded me highly of a late 70s or early 80s superhero adaptation. Special effects were cheap for the time it was filmed, but seemed perfectly fine for a direct to TV or direct to video release. I don't even know if it would have done that bad at the box office, if you were looking for a fair adaptation and weren't concerned about special effects and big budges the movie was otherwise perfectly fine. Wouldn't have pulled in $200 million but would surely have earned more than it cost to make. Actors acted their parts fairly well and were fairly believable. There are moments of comic relief. I watched this in its entirety last night expecting to turn it off, and about halfway through I realized it really wasn't bad. It was interesting enough to keep me watching. The added cheapness of some of its aspects had a certain charm about it. If it weren't for the cheapness of the special effects it was otherwise filmed well enough to suggest it would have cost more than its budget. I let my 11 year old stepson watch it this morning and he didn't thing it was bad either. At least worthy of a DVD release, its not bad enough to hide away in a vault somewhere. The musical score isn't bad either.
