would you end it like that? It's a wonderful film, all throughout. Started a bit slow, but continued its way all while having all the features of a great movie. The plot wasn't one-sided and it added a dimension to the characters that was much needed. However, I couldn't understand the need of that sort of an ending. Why couldn't it end happy? It's a romance movie, not a thriller, for God sakes. I watch this kind of movies to be happy, to feel sad that it's over. I don't wanna be sad cause the main character didn't have a happy ending. Sure, he learned a few things in the end, but couldn't he just come back to get her? Seriously?Jeezus, why am I getting angry over a romantic movie? Why am I watching these movies in the first place? I'm a 19yo guy.Do yourself a favor and watch the movie, but stop near the end, so you can imagine it all ends good.
Adam Raki (Hugh Dancy) is alone after the death of his father. He suffers from Asperger's and has difficulty relating with people. Beth Buchwald (Rose Byrne) moves into the apartment above him. They develop a friendship but its awkward as they move forward to something more. He's lost his job, and her father (Peter Gallagher) is being investigated. This is a really sweet rom-com with mental illness. I am a little concerned about the realism of Adam's mannerism. Hugh Dancy is absolutely lovely which does make it look too nicely written. Sometimes I feel like I can see the lines written coming out of the movie. Nevertheless I do like the allusion to the naked king and the little boy. The two leads are super nice together.
Spoiler Alert. The movie is well written until the last 1/4. It becomes predictable and unoriginal, it neglects to take the movie as far as it should go almost as a means of protecting the hearts of the audience. For the movie to receive a rating higher than a 6 and be deemed a classic, Adam has to die. If he did the movie would be on par with other screenplay masterpieces, but because he doesn't it becomes nothing more than just another decent movie. Don't get me wrong the movie was enjoyable, but the ending just left me slightly upset that Mayer wasn't capable of fully weaving greatness into the conclusion. I recommend the movie, but just don't get your hopes up to be amazed by the ending, because it will let you down.
Watching Adam was frustrating for me. It was a "love story" without love. Because Adam had Aspergers syndrome he really couldn't be close to anyone. So you had the odd circumstance of his neighbor, Beth, falling for Adam but Adam not really being able to respond back in a... well... a normal loving way. It was kinda of like watching someone fall in love with an animal. You think the animal loves them back but in the end you find out the thing just isn't capable of doing so. I was left wanting something that couldn't be.On the positive side the performances were fine all the way around. But for me fine performances don't totality make up for a film that I cannot relate to. I couldn't relate because Adam couldn't relate to people around him.
