Although theorised, no one is really ready when a mountain pass above the scenic and narrow Geiranger fjord in Norway collapses and creates a tsunami over 300 feet high. A geologist is one of those caught in the middle of it.

This film is a great achievement, the effects and acting are stellar. Despite being a Scandinavian film, it is on par with a Hollywood disaster movie. However that is also the problem. There was an opportunity here to let you get comfortable with the patterns of Hollywood disaster movies, then take advantage of not being bound by those rules by completely subverting the viewer's expectations in the final moments. Sadly, this opportunity is missed.
Acting was awful. Plot clichéd. Dubbing into English not too annoying but they didn't subtitle the cell phone texts or some of the other written things that I guess moved the plot. Not the absolute worst movie I've ever seen but Sharknado 1 2 and/or 3 were more entertaining. On the positive side, the scenery is astoundingly beautiful....except for the big wave, you might want to go vacation there.
The science leading up to the mountain landslide and resulting tsunami, is far more interesting than the questionable survival techniques that follow. The beginning has breathtaking scenery and is almost all in daylight. Once the impressive c.g.i. tsunami is over, things shift into closeup images in almost total darkness, and the believability scale descends dramatically. I would say that the chances of an ending like we witness is many millions to one. Nowhere is the hypothermia factor even mentioned. Being submerged in what must be frigid fjord water for even a few minutes would most likely be fatal. "The Wave" is not a bad movie, it is just a film that stretches things a bit far. If you can look beyond that, then it is a movie worth watching. - MERK
I couldn't find an English dubbed version, so i decided to watch the one with subtitles. This, it turns out was a good thing! On to the movie - The movie itself is pretty straightforward. A family of four are planning to relocate. However, the geologist father's paranoia (as his staff obviously seems to think) delays their departure. As the story progresses this turns out to be a somewhat fortunate turn of events. The story line, although predictable, is not bad, and the characters manage to make you feel for them even in a foreign language (for me) which is pretty awesome. The effects and the score also add to the movie and it turns out to be a well worth the time spent. Not the least because the story is rooted in absolute reality. The actuality of the events happening one day makes it genuinely scary. I only wish they had spent more time on the mountain's effects. All in all, a fun film for ecological disaster movie watchers.
