Plot; Through the ages a group of men known as Immortals have battled for the mysterious Prize. Now only a few remain, and they have gathered in New York for their final confrontation.Highlander has a strong basic hook that doesn't hold up under much scrutiny, so it's best to leave your brain at the door and just enjoy the ride. And what a ride it is. With an over the top soundtrack by Queen, it's as much a rock opera as it is an action-fantasy film. Stylishly directed and featuring wonderfully grandiose performances--particularly Clancy Brown's menacing villain The Kurgan--Highlander wins The Prize. But skip the sequels. There can be only one.
So I do not really know why this is a cult movie. The cinematography is pretty good and the music is fun me and the actors do what they can but on the whole the movie is boring and a 08/15 "immortality is a curse" story is nothing special unfortunately. However, I was always interested in finding out how Highlander could become such a huge franchise, even though there is nothing special in it and none of the films is really good. I've seen the long version or the Director's Cut after what I've heard the better version of the movie, with the added instruction sinews and passages in World War II. So I can only say if that was the better version I'm not interested in the rest of the franchise. I mean, I only saw the first movie but both the fans and the haters say that the first movie is the best and if what I've seen is the best thing Highlander has to offer then I'm worried. I have recognized many scenes from parodies of other films, South Park or the Simpsons and I am glad that I finally came to see a movie that has meant so many people something and has drawn some circles but unfortunately no circles in which I want to be. The love story is uninteresting the dear aspect was too much for me, the fights are not so exciting and the film was not sufficiently brutal for my taste. The whole movie also did not look so nice visually all the sets and props were so unaesthetic that it was really hard for me to get involved. The ideas of an immortal who hunts you all over the world is awesome, that's why I love Terminator, but this villain sucks so hard. He is not scary at all and if he was not so annoying Kurgan/Victor Kruger would be worthy of forgetting. But I'd like to call the review a bit positive. I can only say the actors are great, maybe it's because of this weird combination but they all really do their best and even those who do not make it right, like a lid on a glass, in this scenario to fit in that I could imagine no other actor in this role. I'm curious if there really will be a remake of it and I would even work on it because I have some ideas on how to expand this concept I would not mind a complete reboot with Black people and Chinese. But I think there can only be one.
Man did I ever love this movie when I was a kid. It's one of the first things I remember seeing in the theater.Dad never censored me as a child...it would probably be a major crime today to take a 6 year-old to see a movie like Highlander. People afraid it is going to warp the child's mind and make them shoot up a school or something.I never wanted to shoot up a school. I mean, now that I am 37 I'm starting to fantasize about pulling a "Falling Down" but....that is more of a societal thing. And, yeah...back to the review.Queen...you can't ask for more in a soundtrack than Queen. I mean, Freddy is still one of the best singers the world has ever known and, movie grabs you from the opening lines."HERE WE ARE BORN TO BE KINGS...." Thanks to Freddy you know from the start that you are in for a ride. And the script. It's a Gregory Widen story and he is one heck of a great writer isn't he? I mean, the stories that he comes up with are really out of this world. Backdraft is really the only grounded one of his major motion picture scripts.Let's do a story about people that live forever, who are all stuck in a game where only one can win, and have to chop off each others heads to get the prize. It's not everyone, just a few people and they really don't even know why they are part of the game. It was just explained to them by the other immortals that taught them and the ones that really knew how it all started are probably long dead. That is one heck of a pitch. It is almost too unique for its own good. And, wow, it turned into a great movie. So much fun to watch. But wait, there is more, they use swords and we are going to cast someone that is myopic in the lead...and the insurance is probably going to go through the roof. No, we aren't done yet, the myopic swashbuckler, he's French but he's going to be playing a Scot. And his teacher is an ancient Egyptian pretending to be Spanish, played by a Scot and the villain is a Russian played by an American pretending to be a punk. But it all worked. What you have is a movie that lives up to the band that scored it. It is smart, fun, adventurous, unique, so devastatingly unique that it almost hurts. It's like everyone went to a museum, dropped acid, and decided to make a movie and you just have to love it because so really crazy things are happening and...who doesn't love swords?
This is one of the most iconic films of the eighties and has one of the most interesting original soundtracks of the decade (by Queen, with some of their biggest successes, such as "Who wants to live forever"). The main character is the Scottish Connor MacLeod, born in the sixteenth century and expelled from his own clan when it was found that he could not die. Later he met Ramirez, a Spanish courtier who suffered from the same condition and that helped him to understand his purpose in world: defeat other immortals, assimilate their energy until only one remains. Why does this happen? The film never gives an explanation, it seems that the immortals themselves don't know. But the ultimate prize is desirable. The film makes extensive use of flashbacks to show events in the past, and can not always avoid plot holes. But the quick rhythm of the action and the amount of action scenes help public not to think about it. None of the characters seems to have a sufficiently well- developed personality. Even the villain, the evil Kurgan, never fully shows who he is. The action scenes are based on duels, with large swords. Fencing movements would not be able to bring victory to any serious fencer, but are sufficiently good on screen to deceive the public. The film includes some romance, but it's so basic and uninteresting that ends up having no value for the plot. The cast is headed by Christopher Lambert (as Connor), Roxanne Hart (as Brenda), Clancy Brown (as Kurgan) and Sean Connery (as Ramirez). Undoubtedly, the cast does a pretty good job and fulfills its role without major errors, but without great brilliance as well. The exception is Sean Connery, who makes a very good performance and helps a lot to the quality of this movie. The scenarios are good, even the historical ones. The special effects, particularly at the end of the film, are quite impressive, considering the time when the film was made. This film is not at all one of the best I've seen in terms of quality. But it is a film that, despite its weaknesses, works well because its nice to see and entertains the audience very well.
