Aladdin and the King of Thieves follows our heroic Prince about to tie the knot when the wedding is disrupted of a band of thieves. Aladdin's plan to stop them brings him face-to-face with a long lost loved one, together they embark on a perilous treasure hunt.King of Thieves is a good sequel for several reasons, one of the biggest being story, It's driven by genuine character development, relationships and the weight of big decisions. The animation is pretty good, much better then previous straight-to-DVD movies.Another BIG plus is Robin Williams return as the character Genie. Like the first film, this one has lots of hilarious jokes that double as references to other films. Here Disney pokes fun at themselves several times. It's a good script with good characters, good action and good jokes. An all around good movie!
I don't have any nostalgic bias towards "Aladdin and the King of Thieves", and therefore I am delighted to see the effort which has truly been put into making this perfect ending to the story of Aladdin. "The Return of Jafar" I watched a lot when I was a kid and enjoyed it back then, but viewing it again at 23 years of age mostly made me sad about the obvious downgrade in animation and character. Iago's role in it was the only redeeming quality of that. Here the quality of the movie is where it should be, on Aladdin and Jasmin finally getting married and Aladdin's search for his father, Cassim, who never was with Aladdin. When it is revealed that he is actually the leader of the forty thieves things get complicated leading to all the action and dilemma that comes with having a criminal in your family. Their developing of a relationship and an intimidatingly villainous Sa'luk are the greatest qualities of the movie. To have Robin Williams back as the genie is simply a delight. Personally I couldn't stand Dan Castellaneta's performance in "Return of Jafar" and especially not in the series in which I found him obnoxious and not funny at all. The genie IS Robin Williams, period. I must admit that his performance at times got a little narrow with too many Disney references and perhaps a little overdone, even though many of them worked out okay. The animation is by direct-to-video standards really good and compelling. The emergence of The Vanishing Isle and the time spend in it is easily the highlight of the animation. The songs are serviceable but forgettable and a couple of them actually sounded oddly similar. This is the only point on which I get harsh, because the original Aladdin is my overall favourite soundtrack in the Disney catalog, but the musical score for this worked out pretty well at underlining the emotions going on.To sum up, "Aladdin and the King of Thieves" is a well done sequel to one of the greatest animated movies ever made. It has drama, action, romance and Robin Williams providing you with his beloved genie. It is definitely a strong ending to our adventures in the Arabian nights.
I saw this movie today and let me tell ya I laughed so much at it why because Robin Williams is in this movie better than ever YEAH. The film chronicles on Aladdin's big day with Jasmine, but problems arise when Aladdin's long lost father returns and he is working for the King Of Thieves(hence the title). So its up to Aladdin to track him down and help him retrive this golden hand that he is looking for.The animation is great(and hey I never knew there was a studio Down Under eh LOL),the songs are good I liked the first song There's a Party Here In Agrabah as well as Out Of Thin Air.The impressions are so funny I laughed when I saw the Mrs Doubtfire one and the Rocky Balboa one too. Overall if you liked the first Aladdin then sit back, relax and enjoy the epic finally of Aladdin which is one of my all time favourite movies ever. And even at the age of 22 I still love this movie. Can you imagine it took me 22 years to see this film even though it was made in 1996 and I was 6 years old at the time and it took me till now to see it.7/10
Don't watch this if you are not American as they have tried to make all the humour colloquial machine gun US and tragically succeeded. The concept of a genie as a permanent character with unlimited assistance is absurd both in terms of the original story and the fact that he could have whipped the opposition after five minute, but somehow doesn't bother enough.Concept of bad father and struggle of same interacting with the son is very good though far too subtle for any child under ten I would suggest and end the end of the day is bad role model for the young.Technically, seems fine.I don't know why I am forced to do ten lines when a film is so bad. This policy should be reviewed. Five lines is more than enough for a film rated bad by the reviewer .
