Released in 1976-77, "God's Gun" is a Matzo Ball Western about a preacher (Lee Van Cleef) who chases down a band of outlaws (led by Jack Palance) to apprehend a murderer. After the thugs get revenge the preacher's spiritual son (Leif Garrett) teams-up with the one person who can set things aright. Sybil Danning co-stars as a saloon girl and Richard Boone has a minor role. This Hebraic Western is stylized with a Spaghetti flavor, but is badly executed. I could never get a grip on the tone the filmmakers were shooting for. Is it semi-camp? Semi-parody? It's obviously not something to take too seriously, but sometimes the viewer's evidently supposed to. Since you can't take the story seriously it prevents you from caring about the events of the story and thus it's boring.Thankfully, there are some highlights. For one, it was shot in Israel, which is unique for a Western. Secondly, there are a few stunning women, including Sybil Danning when she was around 23 and an uncredited saloon babe named Jessie. Thirdly, it's got Jack Palance and Lee Van Cleef; two Western icons. And, fourthly, Leif Garrett is surprisingly good at around 13 years-old.But the confused tone and relative dullness do it in.The film runs 94 minutes.GRADE: Borderline D+/C- (3.5/10 Stars)

A gang of outlaws known as the "Claytons" and led by "Sam Clayton" (Jack Palance) ride into the town of Crane City and after looting it they ride off. Their next stop is a town near the Mexican border called Juno City which is protected by a cowardly sheriff played by Richard Boone. After the murder of one man they ride off again. Since the sheriff doesn't want to pursue them, the town priest, "Father John" (Lee Van Cleef) decides to go after the man who committed the murder and bring him back to face justice. He manages to do this but the next day he is killed by the Clayton's right in front of his church. When news reaches his brother, "Louis" (also played by Lee Van Cleef) in Mexico he decides to ride to Juno City and take matters into his own hands. Now, while I typically enjoy Spaghetti westerns as much as the next person, I have to say that this film wasn't one of the better ones out there. Although the overall story was pretty good, the execution was terrible and the script needed significant improvement. Even more surprising was how the cast was so badly wasted. As a matter of fact, other than a couple of pretty barmaids by the name of "Chesty" (Pnina Rosenblum) and "Jenny" (Sybil Danning) I can't think of anyone who was remotely interesting. Very disappointing and definitely below average.

i don't know what to make of this Spaghetti western starring Lee Van Cleef and Jack Palance, and directed by Gianfranco Parolini, who was also known as Frank Kramer.it's very similar in style to The Man with no name trilogy by Sergio Leone.i didn't find it all that great.it plods along slowly, until the last 20 minutes or so,when it becomes somewhat interesting.it's an Italian production, obviously, and the dubbing is not that great.also, also the the acting was pretty bad, mostly by the extras, who were probably not actual actors, just people hired for the movie.i also thought the movie was disjointed at times, and didn't always make a lot of sense.but maybe i'm just missing something.anyway,as a piece of entertainment,it's mildly OK,but nothing spectacular.for me,God's Gun is a 5/10

The strangest thing of all about this terrible western is that while it has the look feel and especially the SOUND (loud, overdone) of a spaghetti western, most of the talent involved in the top positions were not European, including the director. Also, the three male leads did not sound right. The lead Lee van Cleef, sounded like himself most of the time , but Jack Palance and Richard Boone were dubbed. This is especially clear with Richard Boone who has a very distinctive voice. If someone out there can tell me why you would dub a distinctive sounding American actor's voice into English, please tell me. I liked the plot twist of the twin brother but this is a bad movie. Enough said!
