Synopsis
Arun Bakshi is an Indian film and television actor and also a singer. He has acted as a character actor in over 100 Hindi films, and as a playback singer has also sung 298 songs. He has also worked in Punjabi and Bhojpuri cinema. He also played the role of Mahant Dashrath Tripathi in Colors's Ishq Ka Rang Safed. He was born and brought up in Ludhiana, Punjab, where he graduated from Arya College, Ludhiana. He worked with the Punjab Agricultural University for a while, before moving to Mumbai, to start his acting career in 1981, first in television and later films. Rajan Mathur (Anil Kapoor) is a Professor in Urdu literature in Dr. Zakir Hussain's College. He resides in Chandni Chowk with his activist wife, Roma Mathur (Shefali Shah). Professor Mathur comes across a young boy called Numair Qazi (Anurag Sinha) who introduces himself as a victim of communal riots in Gujarat.

The film is set in 1947. The exodus has begun after Partition. A Sikh ex-military man in his thirties finds a 16-year-old Muslim girl alone in a nearby village and brings her home. But the villagers tell him he should either marry her or leave her in a camp where people bound for Pakistan are located. But he decides that since he is far older, he would better leave her at the camp. As he is about to send her off with a man bound for the camp and who is prepared to marry her there, she asks Buta Singh, if he is so poor that he cannot even feed her two Rotis per day to keep her alive...
Surkhiyaan
Shera lives a poor lifestyle in Bombay along with his widower dad, a retired school-teacher, and is love with his neighbor, Sapna, who he hopes to marry some day. Shera wants to get rich quickly, but unable to get a job, decides to take to crime and works with a gangster, Jaggu. He soon gets arrested, tried in Court, found guilty, and sentenced to jail for several months. When he is released he returns home to find that Sapna has befriended a lawyer, Avinash Prakash. Shortly thereafter Shera's father is informed that Shera has been arrested again, this time for abducting and killing Revati Prasad, the daughter of wealthy Dharam Prasad.
