Amitabh had ventured into politics and hence lesser films were releasing, Aakhree Raasta(1986) was the last film to release before Shaheenshah(1988). It is a remake of the 1984 Tamil film Oru Kaidhiyin Diary The film had Amitabh play father and son yet again after ADAALAT, DESH PREMEE, MAHAAN.etc. It starts off with young Amitabh Bachchan with a moustache who helps politicians by having campaigns in their name but his wife Jaya Pradha is raped by some evil politicians and he is framed and sentenced for jail. After many years he is released only to realise his son is now an inspector. The film has many great dramatic scenes between the father and son especially their first encounter where the older Bachchan speaks in English, there are some cinematic liberties like the ease at which Amitabh kills people but that is okay. The film however has great dramatic scenes, good chases too Maybe some flaws scriptwise but otherwise a good filmDirection by K Bhagyaraj is good Music is good, most songs are sung by Mohammad Aziz, Gori Ka Saajan is a good song, while other songs are good tooAmitabh Bachchan plays both the roles superbly, though he looks a lil older to play 25 something Vijay, yet he is superb, He was in his 40s during this film and does look wrinkled and out of shape as Vijay. Sridevi is decent, her voice like her earlier films is dubbed, this time by Rekha. Jaya Pradha is okay in a small role, Sadashiv Amrapurkar is good, Dalip Tahil, Bharat Kapoor leave a mark, Om Shivpuri is as usual, Anupam Kher though younger then Bachchan in real life(he was about 31 in the film) does his job well, at times he does overdo it rest are okay.

Some voices said that this was the last best thing we received from the first (Amitabh Bachchan), before the short retirement of the 1990s, and the chain of flops after, then the return with the white hair and the father role. Actually back then, in 1986, for most of us in Egypt (Bachchan) wasn't the best of the Indian cinema, No, he was the Indian cinema, and to tell you the truth most of his works at the moment for what they were.. They were masterpieces. Here, I just can't hold my admiration for this script, it was exceptional. It achieves all what the formula needs and sanely too. There were some action, clever melodrama, hot characters, and smart conflict between law and vigilantism. In fact it doesn't complete without political satire. Yes, it's another revenge story to join the huge amount of Indian movies that deal with that but respectfully it ranks on the top of the pyramid. It's so touching and compact however with some weak points : it was kind of vague did (Anupam Kher) involve in the crime of rape or not ?, how (Bachchan) learned to be that genius planner as criminal ?, where is the train which was big part of the second assassination ?, or how (Kher) speaks out the father's entire hidden history to his disguised son all at once so damn easily !, and the most serious of them all : (Bachchan) as the son knew the awful truth near the end and, in despite of that, he continues guarding the one who rapped his mother and jailed wrongfully his father !??? That was totally provocative and not convincing. Actually that weakened the finale effect violently. Moreover, the intro of (Vijay/Bachchan) where he smashes the doors by his feet, and hits the whole gang all by himself to witness them all fly by his fist saying (I Hate Criminals !), it wasn't the intro of inspector Vijay, it was more like the intro of Amitabh Bachchan !. Also (Anupam Kher)'s comic moments were unnecessary. On the other hand, observe some intense scenes just like the first meeting between the father and his son in English (great stuff), some truly sensitive moment like the one in which the son removes sands over his mom's grave and wipes out her tears in the same time; what a wonderful moment of "cinema" that was. And the perfect flashbacks to regain the past and feel its domination.(K. Bhagyaraja) was more brilliant as its writer more than its director. Certainly as the director he managed to make it nicely and sedately with prudent editing and big cadres to embody the mightiness of the events and the agony of the lead, but he lacked stronger force to push it higher as it missed some refulgence. For instance he totally mastered the last meeting between the father and the son at the cemetery (before the climatic facing at the end), but maybe he didn't master the whole movie as distinguished as this. In brief I felt that nearly everything was less skill than the writing.(Bachchan) pulled it off strongly through the 2 roles he played. Though the movie provided him with 2 good characters, but he suffered from a bit of manipulation in the script that decreased some of the creditability. It's not the best of (Bachchan), but it's definitely one of the best scripts for a movie he was in, and one of his best performances as a real actor. It remains as one movie with special sad personality amongst his entire legacy. It wouldn't be fair to not mention its most memorable line.. Where (Bachchan) as the father came out of jail to discover that his friend, who let his son with to bring up as criminal, brought him up as a police officer, he said in anguish : "I gave you a lamp to light up my life, and you burned me to light up yours !". Even if you thought that you've seen it all before, and despite its own weakness, it's Impressive work. Sometimes we're too shy to admit that melodrama works, but it does, and (Aakhree Raasta) is nearly a good example for that.

Aakhree Raasta is a basic story about revenge. 25 years After being released from prison for the Rape of his wife that he did not commit. Amitabh goes on a quest of Revenge on the three men responsible. Stopping him from these murders and threats are his very own son. His son also played by Amitabh Bachchan is not aware that this man who has threatened to kill these 3 mens is actually his father. This is an enjoyable Police action drama. The older Amitabh delivers a very powerful performance as the emotionally angry old man, hungry for revenge. The movie also Stars the very Talented Sri devi, who was the Top actress at the time. The films weakness would be some of the unnecessary flashbacks and slow pacing. The movie is almost 3 hours long and could do with a lot of editing. The movie still succeeds in entertaining. Just Another Amitabh Classic not to be missed.

When Amitabh did the film Shakti with Dilip Kumar, it was the passing of the torch from the previous champion to the reigning champion. People spoke of how the old master had outdone the new champion with his performance. 14 years later we were to see an older Amitabh with the role reversed. Who would be the actor to reprise the role of the young upstart? Step forward... Amitabh!!! The performances given by Amitabh in the dual role are better than the performances given by Amitabh and Dilip in Shakti.I watched the entire film with a tear in my eye. When you put yourself in the father's position what would you do? Or as the son, could you really follow duty given the circumstances? I know that I couldn't...This film is very well made and performances are strong. If I was asked to recommend a film to show a great performance from Amitabh, this would be it. I would recommend this film over Sholay, Deewar and even my all time favourite Amitabh movie... Agneepath. Just get hold of a copy of this film and see a master of cinema give a devastating performance.
