But that is still not saying much about this film. I'm not even sure where to begin. I guess I'll start with the "message" at the very beginning. As others have already said, it was a very lame attempt by the filmmakers to justify the content of their little film. Very lame. If you're gonna make a somewhat violent film about rape and murder, then just make the film and leave it at that. There was absolutely no reason to try and pretend that it was made as some sort of message to parents and kids about being safe from murdering rapists. They could have just said, "don't walk through the woods with a stranger while trying to score drugs" and not even bothered with trying to make a film out of it. While it is not the worst movie I have ever seen, or even the most disturbing for that matter, it is not worth watching either. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. Some people can't resist the temptation to see what all the "controversy" is about (myself included), but I can assure you it's not as disturbing as some would have you believe and it's just not really worth the time. Pass.
You have to judge this for yourself, do not pay attention to the low rating people are giving this film. I'm giving this movie a 7 rating because it really made me feel like I was there and I didn't get bored or turn away from the screen, accept the disturbing scenes. This movie is worst than Hostel 1 & 2.You need to be fully warned, seriously. This movie made my stomach turn and I'm still disturbed about what I saw and I kind of wish I didn't see this movie. The leader of the pack was extremely vicious and psychotic and played his part to the max. The way he tortured and sexually mutilated these women was bad enough but for it to be be shown in graphic detail in this film was just too disturbing and the violence was worst than any movie I've ever seen.I couldn't even enjoy the scene with Chantal Degroat showing full frontal nudity either, not that she's not a beauty woman. It was just way too disturbing, she's the woman who plays Emily, who by the way is a gorgeous actress who I have to say was extremely brave to even consider doing a part like this. The ending was not a happy ending at all, although I have to say those useless bigoted cops got what they deserve in my opinion, I don't want to say anymore without spoiling the ending.
So can anyone say complete rip off? If you have seen Wes Craven's 1972 film Last House on the Left, then you have pretty much seen this movie. It is almost an exact rip-off from characters to story. There are a couple of things that were added that may make this film be one to watch, but this is totally not an original idea. Even the poster is a ripoff from both the Deranged tag line and The Last house on the Left tagline and nowhere in the credits does it mention Last House or even Virgin Spring, the film that Last House is based on. I know there has to be a copyright infringement buried somewhere with the releasing of this film.
Chaos (2005) *** (out of 4) I've been dying to see this film since Roger Ebert reviewed it last year, which caused a huge debate between himself and the filmmakers. What we've got here is yet another rip of The Last House on the Left, which of course was nothing more than a cheap rip of Ingmar Bergman's The Virgin Spring. Two girls go to a party where they walk off into the woods to buy drugs only to be raped, tortured and eventually murdered. As with the other film, the killer's eventually end up at one of the victim's house. I'm not a fan of the Craven film so it might seem strange that I'd give this a positive review but this film really shook me up with its message and the incredibly graphic and sexual violence. The film has been promoted as having the strongest violence of any film and I might just agree with that. The death scenes in the film are quite shocking and are so bad that they'll certainly stay in my mind forever. However, I don't think the film is only about violence because it works on a whole lot of emotions, which is something hard for any film to do. The film is very sad, depressing, ugly, mean and brutal. It's a very unpleasant film to watch but I believe that was the whole point. The filmmakers wanted to show ugliness at its very chore and the film captures that like not many have. The ending will probably stir up even more debate and at first I hated the ending but the more I think about it the more I think it supports today's culture. I found the performances to be incredibly good, which is another rare thing for a movie like this. Kevin Gage plays "Chaos" and is very menacing. I'm sure 99% of the people who view this movie (even the most jaded horror fans) are going to be disgusted at what they see. Hell, I was but I think that was the point to the film.**As an added side note, I've been reading various horror sites about opinions on the movie and I find it rather sad and funny that a lot are putting this film down for being a rip of the Craven movie. Yet, they don't seem to know that the Craven film was nothing more than a cheap rip of the Bergman movie. I personally feel the Bergman movie is one of the most beautiful films ever made so perhaps some of this controversy will lead viewers to that film as well.
