This movie has a really clever premise in which a man is essentially living his life out of order; every time he falls asleep, he wakes up at a different, seemingly random date in his life. And while at first there seems to be no rhyme or reason to it, he eventually learns that there is a purpose, and that he needs to "pay attention." Turning the whole thing into an odd sort of mystery. It is absolutely fantastic. And then, about two thirds of the way through the movie, it all falls apart in a silly turn that reveals it to be a sort of knock off of a popular fantasy movie from the '40s. From then on, it feels pedestrian and rather maudlin. To me, this looks like a film in which the director had an imaginative premise but didn't really know what to do with it, and fell back on something very unimaginative. A number of people here have complained about the last two minutes of this movie, saying it doesn't fit in with the rest, but I'd say it fits in very well with the part of the movie I don't like, so I'm puzzled by people who like everything except the last two minutes. I wish the director showed the same consistency in his invention that he did in his brilliant short Validation, but admittedly it's much harder to do that for an entire feature.
When I first loaded up this movie via Netflix, the description had me thinking I was getting another time-traveling thriller mystery. Boy, am I glad I was wrong. For those who say this movie had too much of a "sappy" ending, the female lead was STILL his _true_ love. She started the circle of the lead character's life, it was only right that she be there at the "end' of the circle. If you go into this wanting wild science fiction time traveling... you need to find a different title. If you want a GREAT story, with a fantastic beginning, middle, AND end, this movie is a must see, and the B&W and color scenes mixed in, made it nearly perfect.
"Everyday I wake up at a different age in a different year on a different day of my life and it's scaring the hell out of me. I want it to stop." Lovell Milo (Thyne) is trying to figure out what happened with his life. Lately he has been waking up at different ages at different times in his life. One day he will be 24 fall asleep and wake up 8. Wake up at 92 fall asleep and be 20. On top of that he has narcolepsy so he has no control over when he changes. He wakes up one morning and realizes he is engaged and he is really happy, when he wakes up again its a few years later and his wife is dead. He know is trying to do everything he can to stop that from happening. I was very much looking forward to this movie. One of the most original ideas to come out in a while. I was expecting it to be a little like "Memento" but it was original. The acting is OK and the movie is pretty low budget but I really enjoyed this. It gets to the point where you feel for Lovell and every time he falls asleep you feel sorry for him. The way the movie is set up you honestly can't predict what happens next witch is great and really keeps you interested the entire time. The only thing that ruined the movie is the twist at the very end. Movie is going along great and the the last 30 seconds really took all the air out of it and really disappointed me. I would still recommend this but be warned that the ending isn't satisfying. Overall, a very good low budget movie that is worth seeing but had an ending that almost ruined the movie. I give it a B+.
"Shuffle" was a fantastic film that will keep viewers on the edge of their seats! The plot line is almost similar to the movie "Memento," but I believe Kuenne's film showcases a more life lesson filled story: love, passion, sadness, hardship, joy, trouble, and new beginnings. The movie is made in a way in which the viewers feel for Lovell, the main character, and at the same time are discovering his personality. Once you think you have figured out the purpose of Lovell's existence and you feel as if you have the plot line figured out, the film takes a sharp right into an ending you never expected, but wanted the whole time. This movie is definitely a must see!
