Typical giallo fare, this one is particularly weak. "Someone" in a red raincoat is stabbing a group of American tourists in Barcelona. This is indistinguishable from countless other movies in this genre; endless discussions among detectives about "whodunnit," glimpses of nudity to help maintain the viewers interest, and once in a while, a violent murder takes place. Yawn. I searched out this obscure title after hearing someone compare this tripe with "Halloween." I usually don't take anything I read on the internet at face value, but I got suckered this time. With all the great stuff out there, I would recommend passing this one up; it's utterly miss-able, and life is too short to waste 90 minutes of it pointlessly.
All I wanted from this film was a fun Giallo, and that's pretty much what I got. Despite the fact that he's directed a lot of rubbish, I'm actually quite a big fan of Umberto Lenzi, and Seven Bloodstained Orchids in particular shows that he certainly knows his way around a Giallo. This film doesn't come close to that one in terms of quality, and even by Giallo standards; Eyeball is rather silly. It's obvious that Lenzi didn't care too much about making the plot coherent, as barely any attempt is made build characters, and the dialogue between the members of the coach party at the centre of the film is as redundant as the ineffective police investigation. The plot sees a coach full of tourists, which includes adulterers, lesbians and a priest, parading around Spain. They're not the only ones on tour, however, as a blade wielding psychopath is following them round and slicing out certain members' eyeballs before brutally knifing them to death. The police are baffled, and the coach party is sure that the killer isn't one of their number...The main reason why this film doesn't carry much weight in terms of credibility is because the murders aren't taken seriously by anyone in the film. The police concern themselves with minor details, while the coach party continue their holiday and don't spare much of a thought for the murderer's victims! There is some attempt to build a story up amongst the passengers, which includes a lesbian relationship and a man on holiday with his mistress; but none of it really convinces - a fact that isn't helped by the poor dubbing and overplayed soundtrack courtesy of the usually competent Bruno Nicolai. All that being said, this film somehow works because it doesn't take itself seriously, and comfortably fits into the 'fun' side of the Giallo sub-genre. The plot is a bit too wayward, but Lenzi keeps it together by throwing in another nasty murder sequence every time the film looks like it's about to get boring. It all boils down to a suitably silly conclusion, but again it somehow works and makes a lot more sense than the Giallo is famous for making. Overall, I don't recommend going into this film with high hopes; but if you liked Strip Nude for Your Killer and The New York Ripper, Eyeball should suffice.
Umberto Lenzi's "Eyeball" is a mediocre giallo which is about a vicious killer who gouges an eye out of his female victims while slashing them to death. The setting is sunny Barcelona and the suspects include a bus loaded with coarse American tourists."Eyeball" is one of the weakest giallos I have ever seen. It's a shame, because Lenzi can turn out a really atmospheric giallo like "Sette Orchidee Macchiate di Rosso"(1971).The script is awful and the killer-in-a-red-raincoat is nothing new(check out "Don't Look Now").The score by Bruno Nicolai is terrible. There is plenty of nudity and sleaze and some violent murders including throat cuttings and eye gougings. The film is pretty dull and forgettable,so don't waste your time with it.Check out some other giallos instead.5 out of 10.
Played with a straight face, Umberto Lenzi's Giallo EYEBALL is a hoot of a film. It actually takes the subject matter seriously which makes it all the more fun. It's terribly made and what's worse is the corny music theme that is played throughout. The film deals with a group of tourists who begin getting brutally knocked off by a garbage bag wearing killer. Oh, and the killer also has a fetish for cutting out people's eyeballs. Sound cool? Well, it's pretty damn funny but much of the film (when people aren't dyin') is pretty slow and makes it quite a chore to finish. If you're a lover of bad B-movies you might get a kick out of this, others will be appalled by the absolutely cheesy intro.
