This may be a member of the "so bad it's good" category but for a 10 year old in 1964 it was fully entertaining. The music made no impression then, but on re-viewing it 45 years later a couple of the songs were vaguely recognizable("You Are Not a Summer Love" is actually not a bad little ballad all things considered). I had no recall of the wiggling white male tushies, but at age 55, that was far more frightening than the monsters were at age 10. On the other hand, there is little doubt that the girl performing the faux striptease on the beach probably elicited an unfamiliar stirring in my pre-adoloscent loins. The acting? Well, what can you say? It's a movie about radioactively mutated creatures resurrected from the dead who drink the blood of girls dressed in swimsuits and babydoll PJs - what 5th grade atomic age boy could ask for more? The ending, with the monsters writhing, steaming and moaning in the darkness, made visible by the dim light of their burning bodies wasn't bad at all. As a adult - no better than a 2. As a early 60s proto-nerd - a 10. The 6 is a fair average.
*Spoiler/plot- The Horror of Party Beach, 1964. In a seacoast town, radioactive waste is dumped in the sea. The waste causes re-animation of several zombie fish creatures to invade the seaside town and kill. The authorities attack the zombies with salt to stop the menace.*Special Stars- John Scott, Alice Lyon, Allen Laurel, Eulabelle Moore, The Del-Aires.*Theme- Atomic energy is dangerous and creates more problems for mankind.*Trivia/location/goofs- StamFord, Conn. Filmed in 3 weeks. Was rated one of the worst films ever made.*Emotion- This film is extremely hard to view and enjoy due to the basic major production flaws of bad lighting, editing, and direction. The major attention element of the monsters mask design is laughable instead of scary. As such, the entertainment value of this film is zero.*Based On- Atomic fears of the Cold War during the 50's.
At the beginning of this film, you'd think you were watching one of those "beach party" musicals as The Del Aires - a so-so group of the day - provide us with some rock music of the time period. Hey, we even got a folk song later by a couple of girls. It wasn't exactly Joan Baez and company, but they weren't bad.Alice Lyon as "Elaine Gavin" may be one of the all-time worst actresses I've even seen on film. It is no shock this is her only movie. Some of the other actors ranged from bad to decent. However, it's the "monsters" - the guys with the "Creature From the Black Lagoon" suits but with better eyeballs and hot dog-like appendages hanging from their cheeks - that mainly make this horrible film a hoot, making not really horrible but good because it was fun to watch. To its credit, it was fairly fast-moving, too, with enough action to keep one's interest. The "creatures" were an active bunch! It all makes for decent viewing if you are a fan of the 1950s schlock monster and/or sci-fi films.Recommended!
I just had to give this movie a high mark. Not because it was the greatest movie but, I thought it was Very good and because it was filmed in my hometown of Stamford,CT. It frightened me a bit watching it as a child! It's so great to see Stamford's sights the way they were in 1965. Driving up High Ridge Rd. & Seeing K's Market and the crossroads of High Ridge and Long Ridge Road's just wonderful. Those who remember the Country Diner next to the Cities Service station will be happy to know that the Diner is still there! Check out the gas prices at the gas station! Seeing old downtown Stamford brings back many memories. The old Town Hall, Eating at the Woolworths lunch counter! Shopping at Sarners! Even shows the old police station. This is when Stamford was at It's best, just the way I remember it. I have a copy of this B Classic and will alway's cherish it. It's absolutely worth watching if you are into the old drive in movies or might be from Stamford CT! It truly was the first musical horror movie! B>D =^..^=
