I love this movie. I love seeing horror movies that dare to be different, that don't do the same thing I've seen over and over in horror movies before. VOODOO ACADEMY is a dark, intimate little horror movie about some creepy activities going on at a school for boys. The twist is that it has a strong homoerotic overtone, which works for the story. It's also a good example of how creative horror can be on a minuscule budget. I would have given it a 10, but it suffers from some horrible acting. The female lead spends the whole movie reciting memorized lines, but at no time does she give a performance. And the dude playing a priest...well...let's just say he comes across as someone who may have been in movies before, but never actually had to speak a line of dialogue until now. The young actors playing the students are all great, and more than make up for their adult co-stars' lack of acting ability.
It's just basically about six kids that attend Carmichael Bible School and the two owners are trying to make them into voodoo dolls. About three fourths of the movie is the guys rubbing their own bodies. The cast of the six kids was okay, but he two adults were terrible in my opinion. Especially the Rev. Carmichael. He wasn't a good actor at all. When I rented this I was expecting a good horror film, but it defiantly wasn't anything like what I expected at all. I really suggest that you do not get this movie. It is probably the worst movie you'll ever see, because it's defiantly one of the worst movies that I've ever seen. The only reason I rented it was because I think Riley Smith (Christopher Sawyer) is hot.
A high-concept, homoerotic, genre film that - for all its bare chest rubbing, hair gel and glossed-lipped poutiness - falls flat on its face. Even worse acting only tops a lousy script. That said, if you're into barely 20-something boys in spanking white boxer shorts and white socks touching themselves incessantly all over while having a mutual wet dream, well this one's for you! Frankly, I find doing my grocery list more exciting. Surprisingly enough, the production quality is halfway decent, though. Those of us, who like high-concept horror, will hate this one. There's barely an attempt at plausibility, and the level of horror tends to bend more towards cute than scary. Those of you who like homoerotic, this is about as erotic as a PBS film. Is it soooo bad that it's good? No. It's just silly and boring.
The director David DeCoteau who has filmed movies such as some of The Brotherhood movies. I checked this movie out and I thought the DVD version only had the Director's Cut, but the VHS version I rented said it was The Director's Cut on the VHS tape. I watched it and most of the whole movie was just guys rubbing each other. Taken place at a college named Carmichael's Bible College. The plot is about a woman taking hold of her dead husbands bought property and a supposed, twisted Reverand Mr. Carmichael decides to help turn this property with the twisted woman who trys to seduce her very small group of 6 boys into Voodoo dolls. The catch and story to this is that. Reverand Carmichael turns the school in to a church or bible school and teaches about God and Christanity. The whole thing that was surprising is that not only did Reverand say some confusing teaches. He came up with a confessional that is only in a Catholic religion, not a so called Christian religion. The Reverand trys to teach the boys by being pure and worthy, but the boys don't know as that Mrs. Bouveigh and Reverand have a another plan of their own. The Reverand has a weird way of showing his helping hand of trying to rid these boys of sin. That's mostly what he talks about throughout the whole movie. Is being guilty of sin is bad, but the thing that caught my eye is that his confessional is some radioactive type room that turns these boys into some lust objects. The movie mostly deals with boys rubbing each other for some so called bad dream after drinking wine at dinner on the first night of Riley Smith's arrival. Riley refuses the wine and sticks with water and starts to figure what's really going on at the school. The movie is short because the whole story mostly deals with guys just rubbing each other and getting seduced by the Reverand and massaged with this so called deadly wine or something like that. I can tell u now thats the whole plot of the movie. I wouldn't waste your money on this!
