"Bob" (William Bates) is a writer who decides to visit a cemetery for inspiration on his next story. With him is his girlfriend "Shirley" (Pat Barrington) who would prefer to be just about anywhere else. Anyway, as they are driving Bob takes a turn much too fast and they are both thrown out of the vehicle just as night begins to fall. It's at this time that they both hear strange music playing near the cemetery and go to check it out. What they find is both odd and deeply disturbing. Now, as far as this movie is concerned I found it to be extremely long and tedious with the only scenes even remotely of interest being the dance routines of several "ghouls" (for want of a better word) forced to perform a striptease for an underworld demon of some sort called "the Emperor" (Criswell). It's all rather weird and nonsensical with the awkward dialogue and horrid acting being the low points of an otherwise boring movie. In short, this is a bad movie and viewers should hesitate before wasting 92 minutes of their life they will never get back.
This one definitely belongs into the category 'So bad they're good' - the curious little 'story' about a young couple finding themselves at a graveyard at night and unwillingly witnessing the 'shocking' activities of the undead dead is nothing but a pretext for a fanciful striptease show; half-naked 'dead' girls dancing and being punished by the sadistic 'Emperor' for the bad things they did in life - one of Ed Wood strange fantasies, it seems...But we must admit that the producers chose some very well-shaped young women for their acts, almost fit for the Moulin Rouge; so the dances alone are worth watching for lusty gentleman, and not only. And above all, the bizarreness of the whole 'plot' - that, at the time of the film's making, went about just as far as it could without being stamped a porn movie - makes it kind of unique: the creepy settings with tombstones and fog, the 'wardens' with their whips, the delight with which the 'Emperor' follows and explains the 'punishments'; all this gives an almost nostalgic note for today's viewers to this colorful (in every sense of the word, no doubt) nonsense.Ideal for voyeurs, and for horror fans with a BIG sense of humor!
I personally don't consider Ed Wood the worst director of all time(not when there's Friedberg-Seltzer, Uwe Boll and Ulli Lommel lurking about). I don't consider either any of the films I've seen of his classics, but none of them are among the worst films I've seen. Plan 9 I liked despite its problems and Glen or Glenda is a guilty pleasure if also problematic. Night of the Ghouls and this movie, Orgy of the Dead I don't at all like. Like Ghouls, Orgy of the Dead has a great opening sequence, but for me that's it. Wood does have heart as a director, but I didn't feel that here. The effects and sets also look cheap, the script never makes sense and the story is slow and creaky. The acting is amateurish as well, Crisswell has presence but monotonic throughout. All in all, bad even for Wood. 2/10 Bethany Cox
First, let me tell you I am a fan of Edward D. Wood jr. But this film isn't even directed by him, he just wrote the script and helped as director assistant. But that was enough for me, if you know what I mean, so I ordered the "film" to watch it (as it's not easy to find such films here in Switzerland). You know, I thought that "Plan 9" was of the worst movie ever made. I had to change my mind! There is absolutely NOTHING in "Orgy of the dead". Nothing at all! All you get to see, is a bunch of "not-so-good-looking" female strippers, who perform in front of Criswell, the Cemetery Ghoul Master, or something like that.... And that's it! Of course there is some dialogue (written by Ed Wood, so you can imagine...) and there are a few moments here and there... like the wolfman. But this only makes up about 20 % of the movie. The rest, as I said is a lot of non-sense and very offensive to the viewers intelligence cr*p!!
