Anyone in their late 30s to late 40s can identify with the characters in this movie. At one time, the protagonists were at the top of their high school food chain- the athlete, the rocker, and the valedictorian, but faced with mid-life, these three friends must confront failed relationships and unfulfilled dreams. While the technical aspects of the film (lighting and sound) scream low budget, the character development and acting are engaging. The banter between the three friends regarding "sport vs activity", "scrudge", and "Labor Day picnic" gives credence to the longevity of their friendship. John McGinley, supported by Bruce Springstein's "When You're Alone" conveys more with two lines than most actors can with a page. Having grown up on the East Coast making annual trips to SC and FL, I enjoyed the regionalism. Any one miss the old South of the Border signs? The soundtrack certainly added to the film- especially if you are familiar with the lyrics. The Dylan, Springstein, and Dire Straits these guys listened to in their youth eventually gave way to the more upbeat sounds of DelAmitri and Bowling for Soup (which I found humorous given 1985 is probably what the band's most recognizable song). Favorable treatment of women as well. I would recommend this film.
This is a film that was a first time effort by actor, director, writer D.B. Sweeney. The actors in the film are a well rounded cast. The music is well suited for the film. The film gives you a taste of reality, comedy, and introspection. I grew up knowing someone like the main character so this movie had the ability to really hit home for me. I feel that this being his first director, writer, actor project that D.B. Sweeney did great. I look forward to seeing more productions from him. In my estimation he is an under utilized talent from Hollywood. One of his real assets in film is to suspend disbelief with the ability to portray the everyman that allows you to personally identify with his character. This talent makes any film more enjoyable. There is nothing worse than watching a film where you can't relate to the main character. His everyman quality is a unique talent that not all actors possess. This talent makes an actor diverse in their ability to take a role and make it their own. D.B. Sweeney did a great job on this film. Give it a look.
It made me laugh right away. It is great film about the strange way life happens. Maybe it hit a cord with me. I think everyone should give this film a chance. You will find something in it that relates to you."I never wanted to be called a good loser,Show me a good loser and I'll just show you a loser"This was a good comedy, that did not have to resort to gross out gags.Directors today just do not take the time to really craft a movie. The darts, Moira Kelly even makes an appearance! It was great to see them together all these years after the Cutting Edge! John C. McGinley's has always been funny but he shines in this film!I say thank you DB Sweeney, the cast and the crew!
D.B. Sweeney Co-Wrote, Produced, Directed and Co-Stars in this film about three lifelong friends from PA who are rapidly approaching the mid-life crisis portion of their lives. They are all looking to "run away" from something and take advantage of the 2 tickets one of them wins to a College Bowl game in FL.Duirng the road trip they come to many realizations about life, themselves and attempt to find a way to come to grips with their past mistakes and reinvent their futures. Although there are some outrageous moments thrown in along the road trip this film has true heart at its' core and any 30+ male will truly be able to relate to the 3 lead characters and their plight.Kudos to D.B. for making this film out of his own pocket!
