I've never seen any real wrestling (not living in the US, and the whole 'wrestling' scene has low credibility amongst myself and my friends here in Europe). It seemed interesting, loving horror movies and such, however... At first, I was interested how this battle of the monsters would turn out, biggest let-down ever. Imagine the disappointment you get after opening a present, thinking it would be the one you were hoping for, but turning out to be THE thing you just did not want to get... The fights are like any wrestling shows I looked up, the one guy that gets the first beating wins (almost every time). The monsters have some back story, enough to keep you interested just long enough (that's why I watched the movie till the end). But in the end, the 'open' ending will not make you want to see a possible sequel(pray to God there will never be a second one), but instead wanting your money back for viewing it. Even if you ever can view it for a discount price (as I did), it sure isn't worth the money spent in producing it.
You take the good, you take the bad You merge wrestling and a fondness for Hollywood movie monsters, and you get something called "Monster Brawl," a scenario that pits monsters against monsters in a highly improbable setting: the wrestling ring. (Somewhere Hulk Hogan is asking, "Are you freaking kidding me?") There's no plot, no script and no logic. It's a highly fictionalized horror movie sports match done very tongue in cheek with Dave Foley and Art Hindle reporting at ring side and Eighties icon Johnny "The Mouth Of The South" Hart at ringside with two busty babes to spar the monsters. What bothers me most is watching the so-called monsters fighting like wrestlers. The Wolfman doesn't come teeth gnashing, claw ripping and growling like a werewolf; he comes like an actor playing a wrestler in werewolf make up. The Mummy does come dragging and the Frankenstein Monster is still a mindless monster, but the problem is, these creatures should be coming out no holds barred and just tearing loose. The lady vampire doesn't exploit her mystical powers to turn into a bat or mist. They should be fighting like monsters, but some of so-called monsters, like the witch, are actually human outcasts, which should put them at an obvious disadvantage, and to get really nit-picky, some of the background facts are just plain wrong, especially in the case of the Cyclops. With the vast array of classic and movie monsters out there, some of the creatures are invented solely for this film, (Witch Bitch? Swamp Gut?) which leans more to horror fans than for wrestling fans. Actor Lance Henriksen narrates the whole mockumentary with all the intensity and verb of Boris Karloff for a truly creepy atmosphere. It's a fun, raucous display with excellent make-up creations, and Johnny Hart gets the funniest lines here, but I still expected much more than just actors in costume beating the crap out of each other.
Remember when you were a kid and you would dream of your favorite monsters battling each other? You would sit in school daydreaming about what it would be like to see Frankenstein's Monster battle the Werewolf or the Mummy get into hand-to-hand combat with the Creature from the Black Lagoon. This is something you no longer have to imagine. Thanks to Image Entertainment, "Monster Brawl " takes those very childhood fantasies and puts them on screen. The movie is simple to describe. You take all your favorite horror movie creatures and throw them in a wrestling ring to battle it out with each other to the death. Throw in some intro sequences to give each monster's back story and some emcees dishing witty retorts back and forth and you've got a film that should satisfy both horror fans and wrestling fans. The "Monster Brawl" Blu-ray has enough special features to satisfy fans of the movie, making it a worthwhile purchase for those who enjoy it. The film itself starts to drag and loses its novelty effect after a half hour to 45 minutes. I will tell you that I'd rather watch this several times over that sitting through one evening of WWE wrestling. However, if you're a fan of both wrestling and horror movies chances are you'll love this.
This is really a tough one to review because there isn't really any actual acting in it, it's all about wrestling. So if you are a horror geek and you come across this flick and see all those horror creatures fighting against each other then you expect to have a gory flick. But it's all done ringside which basically turns it back into a real wrestling flick because the monsters are in fact wrestlers. But don't think that you will see some cage fight between Randy Orton or John Cena. There aren't any WWE icons here to see, some old school WWF faces are here to see, Jimmy Hart is just playing himself with his annoying voice and Kevin Nash just plays the rough guy. This isn't Smackdown or Raw. This is just some basic wrestling, guess otherwise they had problems with the make-up. I've heard people who loved this flick but they have seen it at a convention with cheering crowds so there it is at it's place but at home it fails completely. Even as I watch WWE on a weekly basis this here doesn't deliver. Luckily they have added some gore here and there but having no script it looks rather cheap. If you can't watch wrestling then forget this flick. For horror geeks just watch it with your friends and be p*ssed an proud while watching it. A strange flick.Gore 2/5 Nudity 0/5 Effects 3/5 Story 1/5 Comedy 0/5
