Mike Hamilton, a Philadelphia lawyer, comes to Naples to settle the estate of his long estranged "black sheep" brother. Once there, he discovers that the deceased has left an 8 year old boy who is being raised by Michael's sister-in-law Lucia Curcio. To make matters worse, Lucia happens to be a sexy nightclub dancer.

As others have pointed out, the film suffers from several faults: the age difference between Gable and Loren, the improbable plot, and stereotyping. Nonetheless, it's a fun watch.Problem is, its true humor is found in the Italian lines, not the English. As when Loren tells the old man she cooks for "ma tu c'hai un verme..." (you have a tapeworm), in reference to his appetite. Same is true for Nando's Italian lines. As for Nando, many times his English is quite incomprehensible, as are those of other Italians. There are some great scenes of Capri, though. A Capri of nearly 58 years ago. The anachronism of the film is also clear in Gable continuing to insist on making reservations for the jet back to the US, as props were still the norm.
Just saw this movie for the first time and enjoyed every minute. Beautiful backdrop, light and funny certainly not meant to be taken seriously, all of which are lacking in today's seemingly all dark movies. The age difference made it slightly awkward at times but hey in real life it does happen! If you want a light romantic movie to share a glass of wine with someone special this is a great choice. And yeah the kid pretty much stole the show.
Sophia Loren gets a 10/10: at 26 she's at her playful and provocative peak. Clark Gable? All the hair dye in the world can't hide the fact that he's more than twice Ms. Loren's age. Gable's 1930s silver screen smile notwithstanding, the biggest joke in this admittedly cute comedy is the premise that a gorgeous, freewheelin' Italian beauty might fall for a stilted 59 year old senior citizen. Try making that movie today and audiences would write it off as dirty-old-man creepy. (Not nearly a "Lolita"; more a "Gigi".)But still... Sophia Loren! Wow! She alone gets the film part marks.
Clark Gable goes to Naples for his late brother's estate and will etc, but there he finds Sophia Loren as his (ex) sister-in-law. Period. You know the rest. But wait. I have to say more, don't I? Actually, there is a little more to it. Clark is engaged to another woman. So all is not easily predictable, is it? And then, there's the little boy, his nephew. Together they try to put a facade over Clark, but he finds out pretty quick what she does for a living, and that the boy is exposed to things young boys shouldn't be. And, he smokes. So, he tries to take the boy back with him to America. This gets even more complicated, doesn't it?! Granted, the film may have its flaws, but it's the type of film that's so enjoyable and sweet, the viewer doesn't care and sits back and has a gay old time. It was actually a lot funnier than I expected. If you find this on a Saturday afternoon on TCM, please watch it. You will thoroughly enjoy it and wonder why you'd never heard of it before now.
