Take It Big
Jack Haley plays Jack North, the nether end of a vaudeville horse act who inherits a western ranch. When he heads to the Great Outdoors to take possession, Jack winds up at the wrong place: a swanky dude ranch. He immediately begins running things, at it's quite a while before his error is discovered. By the time he shows up at his own ranch, he's up to his ears in unpaid debts-which naturally requires a fund-raising musical show as a bail-out. Harriet Hilliard handles the romantic portion of the proceedings, occasionally dueting with her real-life husband, bandleader Ozzie Nelson.

Sweetheart of the Navy
Singer Joan Whitney, called the "Sweetheart of the Navy" by sailors, is struggling to re-open the Snug Harbor Cafe. After her partner, Richard, skips town with the money owed to their creditors, the club opens unceremoniously. Two of Joan's sailor friends, Andy and Pete, offer to help her raise money for the club by staging a fight with Bumper Martin, boxing champion of the fleet. At Andy's request, straight-laced yeoman Eddie Harris replaces him in the upcoming fight. Andy and Pete then intimidate or coerce the sailors into betting on the fight, promising to give Joan the profits. Navy Commander Lodge, who is grooming Eddie for the Naval Academy at Annapolis, is against the fight, however, and Joan decides to "vamp" Eddie to make him fight.

This one is really made in bad taste. What exactly is it? A musical? A silly science fiction piece? A fairy tale for the adults? The only thing, they get bored after just few minutes of watching. The actors grossly overdo it, and the whole thing tumbles down into farce. Could have been so much better! Terry Gilliam's "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus" gives a good example of how this kind of film should be done properly. As for this one, it provokes no emotions and creates no ideas. Weirdness reigns supreme, and it is not a good kind of weirdness... I've seen quite a few excellent Romanian films but this isn't one of them. My verdict: a complete waste of time...

A truly postmodernist movie.Quite rare if we take in account the history of the place (Romanian cinematography !), but really a must.Bold ideas, humour all the way, history and literature intelligent quotes, charming characters and great (most of them) actors, situations the offer you the possibility to choose between a serious approach (e.g.the secret weapon - see what is the real secret and how it offers the possibility to improve, helas, to late, this "deep thinking piece of work") and an easier but still, full of satisfaction one ( the spoon fight or the gifted fairy who's so keen to sing her pathetic little song).Be ready for a good laugh and, if you have the time and will, for a good subject of deep thinking.Don't take it too serious though!
