NYPD Detective Sara Pezzini's main goal in life was to bring down Tommy Gallo, the hitman who killed her father, her best friend, and eventually her partner. While chasing down one of Gallo's thugs, she acquires the Witchblade, an enchanted armored glove once used by Joan of Arc that deflects bullets, extends into bladed weapons, produces visions, and neatly compacts itself into a bracelet.

This was a made-for-TV movie a few years back when comic book adaptations were just starting to make a name for themselves with films such as "X-Men" raking in all the cash at the box office. Unfortunately "Witchblade" is just another cash-in and not at all unique - it is supposedly based on a comic book of the same name, but in all actuality, it's just plain lame. (Hey, that rhymed!) Yancy Butler plays the lead character - a woman who inadvertently stumbles upon a magic "blade" that gives her superpowers to battle evildoers. Enter the Bad Guy Who Wants to Dominate the Earth and other comic book clichés - all in all it's pretty terrible. The acting isn't completely atrocious but it leaves a lot to be desired. The direction is poor and typically made-for-TV in style; however it's the script that is particularly bad - annoying, banal, and packed with really bad dialogue. The fact that this "film" spawned a TV series is kind of surprising because it is basically just a poor cash-in on a rather obscure comic book that I had never even heard of. (But then again, I don't read comics.) View at your own peril.
Sara Pezzini (the beautiful Yancy Butler) is a New York cop suffering from the loss of her father and best girlfriend. They both were killed by the gangster Gallo (Conrad Dunn). However, there is no evidence to prove that Gallo killed them, and Sara, with his colleague Danny Woo (Will Yun Lee), are on his tail. One day, after chasing Gallo's gang, Sara has a shooting in a Museum and a metallic glove weapon 'catches' her wrist, turns into a magic sword and protects her from the bullets and kills three bad guys. Along the story, she will learn how to control the power of this weapon and will become aware of many facts related to her family and origin. I am not familiarized with the character of Witchblade. I did not even know that it is a comic book. But this television movie is really a good entertainment and very above the average, a kind of dark story, with reasonable effects, an excellent soundtrack and camera movements in the action scenes like in a video clip. Yancy Butler is a very fragile and confused character with impressive eyes. The screenplay blends a police story, with action, magic and supernatural. Indeed an enjoyable entertainment. My vote is seven.Title (Brazil): "Witchblade"
It's hard to sit here and knock a series that you know the cast and crew work so hard to bring to world week after week, but sometimes you can't overlook the weaknesses just because there is hard work behind it.As a reader of the comic from its inception, i feel i have a certain right to review the television series. I'm not simply a person who has seen a few shows and sits here and judges. There are many flaws in this series. Bad directing. Terrible editing and very weak acting. The action scenes are some of the worst shot cinematography i have ever witnessed. Quick, meaningless cuts, washed out white flashes to denote supernatural activity all deprive the viewer of being able to embrace the action of a scene let alone know what the hell is going on in it. Suggestion: Should be mandatory for directors in the series to be force-fed John Woo movies. So they can see how an action should be shot. :-)As far as Yancy's portrayal of Sara... her acting looks forced. She looks like she's acting. She's not a bad actress. She was great in Drop Zone but she seemed like she had more fun in that role than she does in this one. This series is in its second season. Let's hope they get their act together and spend some money on better directing and editors. Considering they are saving money on production by filming this in another country (This is filmed in Canada. way to go guys, nothing better then taking money out of the pockets of american film crews right? [sarcastic]) one would think they could afford a better crew.
I loved this movie.LOVED IT!! Did I mention I LOVED THIS MOVIE? Yancy Butler makes such a good cop.I thought this movie was just jam packed with action and drama!I just wish I had recorded the movie when it was on TV-I will never live it down that I didn't.I just wish I had cable so I could watch the show!Hey just think what would happen if Max from Dark Angel and Sarah got together and fought crime together in a movie....that would be so cool!I just don't get why so many people didn't love this movie as much as I did.
