A group of holidaymakers head for the Spanish resort of Elsbels for a 4-day visit. When they get there, they find the Hotel still hasn't been finished being built, and the weather is awful. And there is something strange about the staff—they all look very similar. To top it all off, the weather seems to be having an adverse affect on the Hotel's foundations.

Widely considered to be one of the last truly great CARRY ON movies, this all-star ensemble production takes a simple, contemporary storyline and runs away with it. Notable for featuring the most regular Carry On actors out of any of the films, this is very much a follow-up to CARRY ON CAMPING in spirit. It tackles the subject of the then-booming market for package holidays, sending off the usual faces to a cut-price hotel in Spain for some madcap adventures.Really, the plot here is slim enough to write itself, but watching the various stars interacting is always a lot of fun. And it's one of the few times where I actually liked Barbara Windsor, whose relationship with Sid James is at its lecherous best. Kenneth Williams is the buffoonish group leader, Charles Hawtrey appears for the final time playing a version of himself, and Kenneth Connor and June Whitfield make for a delightfully repressed double act.The jokes are usually puerile and ever low brow, but there's something to be said for the quick-fire rate of the gags which never let up from start to end. We get a delightful Peter Butterworth as the increasingly frazzled hotel owner, a destructive climax that brings to mind the delights of CARRY ON UP THE KHYBER, and more familiar faces than you can shake a stick at. Watch it for the nostalgic days of yesteryear where silly slapstick routines ruled the day, guys played idiots or lechers, the girls were either totty or repressed, and audiences were happily entertained by it all...
This is a fun farce from the Carry On crowd. In this film, the group go on holiday to a place called Elsbels. The resort they stay in, The Palace Hotel, is not quite finished, which is part of the fun. There are shared baths (literally) and strange things happen when you turn on the faucet etc. So, the film relies on sight gags, double entendres and one liners and guess what? It succeeds. The young ladies in this film look great, like Sally Geeson, Gail Grainger and the bubbly, buxom Barbara Windsor. The men, who are lechers, repressed, undersexed (and so on) are fun to watch also. The movie is politically incorrect, which given the time makes sense, but its refreshing to watch today because of it. If you've seen other Carry On films, you know what you're getting. With the ladies here, you're seeing a bit more than usual. This is a consistently fun film, so enjoy.
I have always liked the Carry On films, with their double-meaning sexual innuendo dialogue and moments of slapstick comedy, but I can see why the critics give this one two stars. Basically, many British people are gathering on a coach to go on a Spanish holiday to an island called Elsbels to the Palace Hotel. What they didn't know is that it is not completely built, plus they have to share bathrooms with their neighbours, they have crap draws, and many other complications and complaints that the owner Pepe (Peter Butterworth, putting on quite an amusing accent, e.g. peace sounding like the bad P word). Starring Sid James as Vic Flange, Kenneth Williams as Stuart Farquhar, Charles Hawtrey as Eustace Tuttle, Joan Sims as Cora Flange, Barbara Windsor as Sadie Tomkins, Kenneth Connor as Stanley Blunt, an apparently crap (I personally can't remember who he is) Jimmy Logan as Bert Conway, June Whitfield as Evelyn Blunt, Hattie Jacques as Floella (a ridiculous hag character, not as memorable as her usual Matron), Bernard Bresslaw as Brother Bernard, Sally Geeson as Lily, Carol Hawkins as Marge, Jack Douglas as Harry and Patsy Rowlands as Miss Dobbs. I admit it is not great, but there are just enough dialogue gags, and of course Babs in the shower, and going to to her bum with that iconic whistle, and later a rapid rip off of her bra. Okay!
I watched this film the other day, hoping to cheer my self up after paying a lot of money on getting my car repaired. And as usual it did the trick, well it did for a couple of hours. The film is fun from start to finnish,it has most of the regular cast, playing their usual parts. In this one Peter Butterworth gets to use a different accent, which he does to great comic effect. The only problem i found was that the version I've bought seems to have a scene missing,my wife thought the same thing.I do specifically remember a scene when they all go down the monks cave, and i think Sid James puts a monks robe on,and hands out wine.I cant remember exactly what happens,as i hadn't seen it for a few years, but i had seen it a few times before, and do definitely remember a scene like that.My wife and i were trying to remember what happens in that part and why it has suddenly been dropped in the new DVD release .We thought it may have something to do with upsetting the church.Maby there was complaints about it so its now been cut out.But in all this is a fine comedy dealing with the Brits Abroad, when in the 70s this was a great adventure for any Brit,as it was expensive then. The film also deals with all the holiday nightmares, the ones that ruin your holiday, such as drilling,no water, windows that don't open etc.But this hotel had everything wrong with it,for a start it was only half finished. So i recommend if your feeling in low spirits, watch a carry on film,as their bound to cheer you up.
